Seton Academy boys basketball coach Brandon Thomas has resigned.

Thomas said it was best for him, the school and program that he move on. He said he does not have another coaching job.

Thomas was 71-25 in three seasons at Seton and led the Sting to a second-place finish in the Class 2A tournament in March, and a fourth-place finish in 2012. The Sting lost to Harrisburg in a heated championship contest in which Seton players said Harrisburg players used racial taunts. The Illinois High School Association could not substantiate the claim.

Following the 2013 state title game in Peoria, Thomas had his team leave the floor and not accept the second-place trophy. He later apologized. As a result of a halftime tirade and other conduct, the Illinois High School Association suspended Thomas from coaching his team in the postseason in both the 2014 and 2015 postseason tournaments.

"Obviously, that played a part in it," Thomas said. "I think it is the right move for me right now. It is best for all parties."

The IHSA also said Harrisburg head coach Randy Smithpeters may have no involvement in 2013-14 postseason, unless he first successfully completes a behavior training program.

Thomas said he is also fortunate to be a part of a great program.

"The parents, the players and my assistant coaches, I am grateful for having the opportunity to work with them," Thomas said. "Our parents, for allowing me to coach their kids and I have had some great athletes. My assistants were flexible and put in a lot of time." -- Mike Nieto
