Crete-Monee freshman Adrianna Vera has already been impressing her soccer coaches with her play on the pitch, and with the impressive resume she's built in the classroom, it looks like the Warriors have found a special player for the coming years.

Vera is the top student academically in the freshman class and posts a 4.33 GPA. Vera is also a member of the math team, and the team will compete at state on May 4 in Champaign at the University of Illinois. Vera did say that math isn't her favorite subject, but instead would choose science or biology.

"I do like math but it's not my favorite," Vera said. "But I know I'm good at it so I try to focus on it. My favorite subject, I would say, is science. I love biology. The freshman classes have definitely presented a challenge for me."

Vera said she is trying some new academic challenges this year, and engineering was one of the subjects she chose.

"I'm doing engineering and that's a new thing for me," Vera said. "I'm trying to try new things. I did engineering this year, and I definitely like it. It's tough, but I like the new ideas it gives me."

As a soccer player, Vera is already making an impact at the varsity level. For her work ethic and aggressive nature on the field, head soccer coach Julian Lagunas has likened her to former Crete-Monee standout, Carlos Posada.

"She's one of those that you notice right away that she's very competitive," Lagunas said. "She wants to win. She wants to work hard. She practices hard and just gives everything and does whatever she has to do to push herself to the front of the line or the front of the group."

Vera claims that she hates to lose and is always attempting to be at the front.

"I hate to lose," Vera said. "I hate being second. I'm usually always first or strive to be first and strive to be the best. I love competition, it just pushes me more. I take competition seriously."

Even as a freshman, Vera brings plenty of soccer experience to a Warrior team that will be looking to win their share of games this season.

"I've played club soccer since I was eight years old," Vera said. "And I've been playing since I was five. This year, coming to high school it's a new experience. I'm still getting used to playing with new players."

Vera and her fellow Warriors should be able to compete at the top of the Southland Athletic Conference this year, and although it is still early, Vera feels the team can have a memorable year in 2013.

"The season's still at the beginning," Vera said. "But I'm still preparing more and more, and I think in the end, it'll be a great season, and we will do really well."
