CHICAGO HEIGHTS | Penalty kicks was not how Homewood-Flossmoor coach Jim Boswell wanted this game to end.
The Vikings dominated Oak Forest but were unable to record a goal in regulation, and the Bengals defeated Homewood-Flossmoor 3-1 in penalty kicks to advance in the winner's bracket of the Windy City Classic. Lauren Hurley scored the lone Viking goal in penalty kicks. The Vikings had two chances to score on set shots at the end of regulation and at the end of the first overtime period but were unable to convert.
"We had our opportunities, we just weren't able to finish on them," Hurley said. "Obviously, that's something we need to work on. It was good to see we were able to get opportunities, but in practice we need to work on putting them in the goal."
Homewood-Flossmoor (1-1) battled Oak Forest to a standstill in the first half but controlled much of the play in the second half. Vikings keeper Zoie Cole did not record a save the entire game, while Oak Forest keeper Abbey Anderson finished with 10. After a hand ball with 30 seconds remaining in regulation, the Vikings were given a chance at a set play, but Sammi Farkos' shot sailed just over the Bengals net.
"If you don't get scoring opportunities, you basically go to a coin flip at the end of the game," Boswell said. "We practiced yesterday, and the people who took kicks were five for five, but today, it just didn't go our way. You do it again tomorrow and who knows what happens."
With 45 seconds remaining in the first overtime period, the Vikings again were given a set shot just outside the Oak Forest box, but Kelda Sandstrom's shot missed high on the Oak Forest goal.
"I was happy with the intensity we came out with in the second half," Boswell said. "The second half, we imposed our will. It's just unfortunate it had to come down to penalty kicks."
In consolation play, Marian Catholic (1-1) defeated Thornwood (0-2) 2-0 on two Hailey Losselyong goals. All of Saturday's games of the Windy City Classic were to take place at Reavis High School but because of poor field conditions, Saturday's tournament games will be played at alternate sites.
