Bloom Township football coach Tony Palombi said his team isn't taking anything for granted, and it has showed in practice.
"We know if we lose, we may not have enough (playoff) points," Palombi said. "We know if we win, we are in. We control our own fate."
The Blazing Trojans are 5-3 following a 20-14 loss to Rich East on Saturday. Six wins qualifies a team for the playoffs. A five-win team must have enough playoff points. A team receives a point for each of its opponent's win.
Bloom Township has never made the playoffs since Bloom and Bloom Trial high schools merged athletic programs in 1995. Bloom last made the playoffs in 1989.
Crete-Monee (8-0), T.F. South (7-1), Mount Carmel (7-1), Thornton (7-1) and Homewood-Flossmoor (6-2) have punched their postseason tickets. It's now only a matter of seeing how the teams will be seeded.
