Bishop Noll senior outside hitter Carissa Jones has committed to play at Purdue Calumet next year. The Whiting native was a four-year letter winner, was a two-time Greater South Shore Conference first-team pick. She led the Warriors to the Class 2A state championship game, getting 253 digs, 245 kills and 115 aces for the year.
"Carissa is a major asset to our team,” Peregrines coach Julie Wiejak said. “She is incredible in first ball contact and brings a ton of fire and heart to the floor. She has a tremendous will to win and helped drive her team to the state championship (game) last year. I am very excited to see what Carissa can bring to our team and where she will help take us."
Three locals earn IBCA scholarships: The Indiana Basketball Coaches Association gave out scholarships to 36 seniors in Indiana this week. Each student received $750 in the names of Marion Crawley, Junior Mannies and Pat Aikman. In all, the IBCA has awarded $572,000 in scholarships through the years.
Andrean's Frank Podkul received a scholarship. He was coached by Scott Hicko. Crown Point's Katija Tarailo received one and she was coached by Annie Equihua.
And Hebron's Daisy Heath earned one as she assisted coach John Steinhilber.
Gary to honor football players: The first annual Northwestern Conference Football Awards banquet will be held on June 7 in Gary. It will be held at the "Soul Food for You" restaurant at 411 E. 5th Avenue, across from U.S. Steel Yard. The dinner will take place at 4 p.m. with the ceremony at 6.
The cost for Gary players is free if one paid ticket of $30 is purchased.
PCC baseball draw: Hebron will host Boone Grove in the opening round of the Porter County Conference baseball tournament May 21. Westville-Washington Township, LaCrosse-Kouts and Morgan Township-South Central are the other quarterfinal games. The semifinals are May 23 at home sites with Washington Township hosting the championship at 11 a.m. May 24. Washington Township is defending champion.
Leading the way: The region has the state's top performances in four boys track event. They are Lake Central's Gelen Robinson in the discus (176 feet, 5 inches), Chesterton's 3,200-meter relay (7:59.71), West Side's 400 relay (42.02) and West Side's 1,600 relay (3:20.7).
Andrean hosting basketball camp: The Andrean 59ers All-Skills Basketball Camp will be held from June 16 through the 19th from 2 to 5 p.m. at the school. It is for any students aged 8 through 14. The camp will be run by Andrean boys basketball coach Scott Hicko. The cost is $70 and each camper will receive a T-Shirt.

New site named for state golf finals: Beginning this fall, Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel will be the site for the IHSAA boys and girls state golf finals. Prairie View will be the fifth site for the girls finals and seventh for the boys finals.
Legends Golf Club in Franklin will host the boys state finals in June. It's been the state finals site since 2000.
