It was an exciting day at Hanover Central on Monday. Senior pitcher Ashley Yoways signed her National Letter of Intent to play softball at the University of Iowa.
The Times first-team All-Area pick was 16-9 with 207 strikeouts and a 1.26 ERA last spring. She batted .450 with 22 RBIs, eight doubles and three home runs.
"It was very exciting," Hanover softball coach Larry McMillen said. "Ashley has worked hard and overcome a lot. She is very deserving of this opportunity."
Wideman picked for North-South All-Star game: Hoosier Basketball Magazine announced the details for the 26th annual North-South All-Star game for boys and girls basketball. The games will be played at Vincennes University on April 13. The girls game will tip off at 1 p.m. with the boys game at 3.
Only one Northwest Indiana player was picked. Lake Central's Tyler Wideman will play for the North in the boys game.
IBCA picks Academic All-State teams: The Indiana Basketball Coaches Association released its selections for the Academic All-State basketball teams. There were 33 boys and 36 girls honored in the state.
The area boys players selected to the first team were Munster's Pat McCarthy and Chesterton's Cole Teal. The honorable mention players were Portage's Luke Kizer, Lake Central's Matt Meneghetti, Chesterton's Andrew Ralph, Chesterton's Brandon Roeske, Chesterton's Corey Rusboldt, River Forest's Tyler Thompson and Lake Central's Chris Tuskan.
On the girls' all-state team, Crown Point's Katija Tarailo was the only area player on the first team. The honorable mention selections were Covenant Christian's Calli Beezhold, Griffith's Amy Bubala, Kankakee Valley's Lexie Eggert, Hobart's Morgan Flaharty, Crown Point's Abby Kvachkoff, Kankakee Valley's Ashley Norberg, Highland's Aleysha Slaven and Covenant Christian's Carrie VanderMolen.
No locals on Indiana All-Star girls team: The Indiana All-Stars girls basketball team was announced on Thursday and there were no players from Northwest Indiana selected.
The team is led by Miss Basketball Whitney Jennings of Logansport. The other team members are Evansville Mater Dei's Maura Muensterman, Fishers' Alex Hochstedler, Bloomington South's Lauren Whitlatch, Homestead's Sydney Buck, Lawrence North's Destiny Washington, Columbus North's Tayler Goodall, Westfield's Kayla Brown, Indianapolis Ben Davis' Danielle Cuttino, Lawrence North's Ana Owens, Fort Wayne Canterbury's Kindell Fincher, Mt. Vernon's Erica Moore and Penn's Caroline Buhr.
