Swimming is Chesterton freshman Wesley Slaughter’s lone prep sport, but he doesn’t expect to get burned out.
Slaughter loves the water, and swimming isn’t the lone way he enjoys his aquatic time. Slaughter also enjoys surfing, bodyboarding, skimboarding, wakeboarding, all in nearby Lake Michigan.
“When I’m not focusing on school work,” Slaughter said, “I’m usually in some form of water (activity).”
And he’s normally not alone. Teammates Andy Hurst and Gary Kostbade plus Chesterton girls swimmer Cara Kroeger also take part.
Slaughter and others also took part in helping a boy get back to shore safely this past summer.
“We were out surfing, and a little boy got stuck out in the undertow,” Slaughter said. “We were already out (in the water), so some park rangers asked us to help out. We paddled out and got the boy back.
“We understand that it can be dangerous out there. When it gets too crazy, we don’t go out.” -- Jim Hunsley
Ten 3s and a free throw to go: Whiting senior Bri Blackwell scored 75 points in three games for the Oilers at the Hanover Central Shootout. A big 61-60 win over Hobart was the highlight. A 47-43 loss to Knox was the other.
But Blackwell is now just 31 points short of 1,000 career points heading into Saturday's at home against Boone Grove. Get the cards out and do the math. -- Steve Hanlon
A 21 Cent song: 21st Century won a sectional last year, but lost some talented big men to graduation. But last Saturday's win over Chicago Prologue showed some signs of life.
Senior David Jernigan (6-foot-7) scored four points, but grabbed eight rebounds in the 74-62 win. DeJuan Pinkin (6-3) scored 10 with six boards. And Alec Boose (6-5) scored three with four rebounds and six assists.
"They're still missing too many shots right around the basket," Cougars coach Rodney Williams said of his 4-1 team. "But they're getting better and need to keep doing that."
New home for Cougars: 21st Century will play its first home game in its new gym on Jan. 10, against Lighthouse. Delays in completing the project kept it from being ready until now.
The new gymnasium is at 8th Avenue and Washington in Gary.
