Brett St. Germain was offered the Lake Central football coaching position on Tuesday, and the former Andrean coach accepted the position, two sources close to the situation told The Times on Thursday.
The hiring is pending Monday's Lake Central School Corp. meeting in St. John.
"I don't think I'm in a position right now to comment," St. Germain told The Times late Thursday.
Crown Point's offensive coordinator the last two seasons, St. Germain will replace Bill Melby, who resigned following a five-year run during which his team went 18-35.
St. Germain was 50-12 in five years at Andrean and coached the 59ers to victory in the 2004 Class 3A state championship. He was the 2004 Times Coach of the Year after leading the 59ers to a 13-2 season that ended with a 21-14 win over Heritage Hills in the RCA Dome.
The Merrillville grad left Andrean after the 2007 season when he saw a job posting at Crown Point.
Back then he told The Times, "I'd like to get back into head coaching one day, but it will have to be the right situation."
St. Germain previously was a finalist for the head coaching position at Portage, where Mark Peterson succeeded Craig Buzea in June 2007. He also was in consideration to take the reins at his alma mater, where Zac Wells was promoted from within in March 2006. St. Germain also applied to lead the Indians previously before Melby moved in from Gavit in May 2004.
