South Central earns first win
Biggs goes the distance in shutout of Lake Station
LAKE STATION | For once, everything went right for South Central.
Ethan Biggs and company steamrolled winless Greater South Shore Conference foe Lake Station 48-0 to earn victory No. 1 on the season.
Biggs finished with 15 carries for 164 yards for the Satellites (1-5, 1-3). He also snagged an interception during the first play of the second half and returned it 70 yards for a touchdown.
"Ethan was fantastic tonight," Satellites coach Jud Tolmen said. "He was definitely mentally in the game tonight."
Senior quarterback Bryant Hoover connected with receiver Duke Eaton twice in the first half for touchdowns. Hoover also ran a 10-yard keeper for another touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Tolmen said the real catalyst in the Satellites' first win was sophomore Blake Geskey, who finished with just 16 yards on the evening, but led in a different fashion.
"He was the spiritual leader tonight," Tolmen said. "He was not going to let us lose. He carries us on his back. If we would have given out a game ball, it would have gone to him."
The win meant a lot to the team on the heels of a tough home loss to Wheeler.
"We finally played our type of football tonight," Tolmen said. "That's smart football. It was a great team effort, and a great win for the kids."
Defensively for the Satellites, senior Ryan Lippold led the way with four solo tackles, a sack and a blocked punt in the second quarter.
"He really orchestrated the whole defense tonight. He had guys moving on D when we needed them to move," Tolmen said.
Lake Station (0-6, 0-4) simply couldn't move the ball on Friday. The Eagles finished with just 49 yards, all of which came on the ground.
The lone Lake Station bright spot was junior running back Jerry Castellanos, who finished with 42 yards on the night.
"We've been there before," Tolmen said of Lake Station. "We wish them the best of luck for the rest of the season."
