Wolves bounce back, top Lake Central
L.C.'s late rally cut short by fumble late in fourth quarter
ST. JOHN | With starting quarterback Rodney Washington not playing due to an injury Friday night, senior running back Adam Harmon knew he had to pick up the load.
The talented running back did just that as he found the end zone three times while piling up 268 all-purpose yards by way of rushing, receiving and adding in a pass for good measure as Michigan City beat Lake Central 21-13 in front of the homecoming crowd at the Burial Grounds.
"Early at times we could do what we wanted out there," said Harmon, who leads the area in total yards with 1,171, with 892 rushing. "It was fun playing quarterback back there and throwing the ball around. It's something different for the defense to look at."
Michigan City (5-1, 3-1 DAC) coach Craig Buzea told his offensive line before the game that the goal was 300 yards on the ground for Harmon. Buzea wanted to alleviate the pressure off of sophomore quarterback Joel Hirsch who stepped in for the injured Washington, who had hurt his arm in last week's loss to Merrillville.
Purdue-bound lineman Ryan Isaac had big plays for the Wolves as well, finding himself in the L.C. backfield often with a sack, three tackles for a loss and a fumble recovery.
The Indians (1-5, 0-4) had their chances late in the game after quarterback Ryan Hennessey found Andy Arellano for a 36-yard strike to bring the score to 21-13. The pooch kick on the ensuing kickoff was recovered by L.C. inside the 25, and four minutes remained on the clock.
The second play of the drive, the Indians fumbled the ball on a bad pitch, which was recovered by the Wolves.
"Obviously when we had the ball inside the 20 late in the game and gave it away that really hurt," L.C. coach Bill Melby said. " A lot of people wrote us off this week and our kids fought incredibly hard."
L.C. junior running back Tanner Redlarczyk led the Indians offense with 130 yards on 21 carries.
