It took the Crete-Monee boys basketball team three quarters to ramp up, but the Warriors outscored Oak Lawn 27-12 in the fourth quarter for a 71-55 win Monday in the Warrior Turkey Tourney.
It was the first win for new coach Tom Cappel.
Crete played without Illinois recruit Michael Orris, who is out for at least a week with a sprained left ankle.
"He hurt it after practice on Friday," Cappel said. "He didn't land on anyone or anything. He took a shot and fell down. He is in a walking cast right now. We hope to have him back Dec. 3 for our shootout."
Jordan Perry led all scorers with 18 points, five rebounds, three steals and three assists. Marvie Keith scored 16 points, added six assists and two steals.
Mark Connor had 14 points and LaQuon Treadwell had 11.
"We had 16 turnovers in the first half and that is too many," Cappel said. "We cut it down to five in the second half.
"I am proud of how we played without Michael. We struggled, but we came back."
Aurelio's Pizza/Chicago Heights Classic: Tyler Ulis led three Marian Catholic players in double figures with 17 points to host Marian Catholic to a 53-44 win over South Shore in the opening game of the Aurelio's Pizza Chicago Heights Classic on Monday.
Ulis also had six rebounds, five steals and four assists for Marian (1-0), which will take on Thornwood at 6:30 p.m. today.
Christian Halley (three steals) and Ki-Jana Crawford each had 10 points for the Spartans, who jumped to an 18-4 lead after one quarter and limited the visitors to three points in the third quarter.
Mike Peabody finished with four points and five rebounds for the Spartans, who were paced in rebounding by Erik Crittendon with nine boards.
Homewood-Flossmoor beat Thornwood 55-51 as Antonio Bishop had 18 points and Tim Williams added 12.
Thornwood's Darell Combs had 20 points and Khapri Alston scored 14.
At Bloom's M'Cann Gym, Nhyree Mitchell led three Bloom Township players in double figures with 14 points as the Blazing Trojans opened their season with a 69-36 win over Fenger.
Henry Hicks and Johnny Griffin had 10 points each.
Hillcrest beat Mount Carmel 69-54 as Jalen Loving had 16 points.
Mount Carmel was led by Billy Patterson's 19 points.
Kamal Shasi had 14 points and JR Tolliver had 10. Damon Goodloe Jr. added seven rebounds.
Illiana Christian 64, Somonauk 44: Brandon Martin scored 16 points, Jon Zanstra added 14, and Austin Vandersluis had 11 points and seven rebounds to lead Illiana Christian (1-0) in the opening round of the Seneca Thanksgiving Tournament.
Illiana Christian will play Reed-Custer at 5 p.m. today.
Illinois Lutheran 112, Christ Lutheran 44: Austin Wood's 30 points helped the Chargers to an offensive outburst at the Illinois Lutheran Tip-Off Tournament.
Sam Baluert added 18 points.
Seton Academy 73, Morton (Ill.) 53: Mark Weems Jr. led three players in double-digit scoring as the Sting opened their season with a win over the Potters at the Lincoln Tournament.
Peotone 41, Beecher 39: Nick Burkhardt just missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds as the Bobcats fell to the Blue Devils in the Interstate Classic at Manteno.
Jake Krabbe had five assists and Nick Oosting had seven points and four steals.
Ladycat Fall Invitational: Amari Grffin's 13 points helped Times No. 5 Beecher beat Bradley-Bourbonnais 36-29 in one semifinal.
Rachel Lee made four fourth-quarter free throws to ice the win and Ashley Carroll had eight points. The Ladycats (5-0) will play Peotone at 7:30 p.m. today for the championship.
In the other semifinal, Peotone beat Illiana Christian 35-22.
Illiana Christian (2-2) was led by Megan Knapper's eight points.
Seton Academy 38, St. Francis deSales 33: Freshman Desiree Jackson had 10 points and 13 rebounds to help the Sting (3-1) clinch the championship at the CICS Longwood Thanksgiving Tournament.
Arianna Jackson had 14 rebounds for Seton Academy, which is undefeated through three rounds.
Crete-Monee 1,407, Oak Forest 1,334: Jasmine Fisher's 377 series led the Warriors to a season-opening win over the Bengals.
She also had a 190 game.
