Three region schools earned recognition in The Associated Press Preseason Top 10 football poll released Monday.
Merrillville was ranked 10th in the Class 6A poll, Andrean 4th in 3A and Whiting 5th in Class A.
Earning the top spots were Lawrence Central and Carmel (6A), Indianapolis Cathedral (5A), Indianapolis Chatard (4A), Hamilton Heights (3A), Indianapolis Ritter (2A) and Sheridan (A).
Boone Grove 6, Morton 1:Freshman Emily Martinez scored three goals in her first varsity match and Olivia McCafferty set a school record with five assists as the Wolves won their opener.
Wheeler 1, Hobart 0: Lauren Fratzke scored the lone goal of the game to give Wheeler a season-opening win. Goalie Katie Spoor made five stops for the shutout.
Pam Richa recorded seven saves for the Brickies.
Andrean 6, Bishop Noll 1: Nursing a 2-1 lead near the end of the first half, Maddie Mandich made a save on a penalty kick and her team rewarded her by scoring four more goals in the second half.
Danielle Tazic scored four goals for the Niners (1-0) and Mandich made six saves.
Julia Kusiak scored the goal for Noll and Kirsten Markusic made 16 saves for the Warriors.
Chesterton 6, Boone Grove 0: Billy Biehl and John Ward scored twice each, and Trent Weller assisted on three goals for the Trojans in their opener. Caleb Gmyrek made five stops for the shutout.
Community Baptist 2, Victory Christian 0: Evan Duey made eight saves in the loss for the Lions (0-1-1).
Washington Township 25-25-25, North Newton 4-11-9: The Senators easily dispatched the Spartans in non-conference action. Emma Hollopeter had seven digs for the Spartans.
Wheeler 25-25-21-25, Morgan Township 21-22-25-10: Belle Bravo had six kills, four aces, 16 digs and 20 assists as the Bearcats opened their season with the win. Jordynn Parks chipped in 12 kills for Wheeler (1-0), and Cristina Gamboa had 15 digs.
Highland 25-25-25, Hammond 3-14-10: Kara Randall was 16-of-16 hitting with four kills and Hannah Ryzowski was 9-of-11 hitting with three kills to lead the Trojans to the win. Brittany Fowler was 33-of-33 passing with nine assists.
Lowell 210, Andrean 212: Emma Littrell shot a 45 at Innsbrook Country Club as Lowell snuck past Andrean in an NCC matchup.
Lexi Prasco paced the 59ers with a 46.
Lake Central 4, Wheeler 1: Wheeler captured the point at No. 1 singles then it was all Lake Central the rest of the way. John Mamelson and Chase Owczarzak swept the No. 2 doubles point 6-0, 6-0.
