Mt. Carmel graduate and Northern Illinois freshman Jordan Lynch was voted as a captain to the USA Football Junior National Team, which will play in the inaugural International Federation of American Football Junior World Championships starting Saturday.
"It's really an honor considering my teammates voted me a captain," Lynch said. "To be a captain of the USA football team and to play in the games, it is a great honor."
The event starts Saturday at Canton's historic Fawcett Stadium. Team USA will play France at 7 p.m. Region time. Lynch and three other were named co-captains -- two on defense and two on offense. Lynch, the Times Illinois Offensive Player of the Year, will be playing safety and said he is having fun playing defense.
"It is different and I am learning some different things like back-pedaling and reading offenses," Lynch said. "Everybody is kind of flying around and trying to get to the ball."
E.C. Central grad Matthew Page, who will play at Ball State, is also on the team. Mt. Carmel head coach Frank Lenti is Team USA's offensive line coach.
Lynch said Team USA scrimmaged Sweden on Monday.
"It was neat to meet their team and to see how other countries come out and play football," Lynch said. "I think this is just a good experience."
