Mount Carmel edged Catholic League rival St. Rita 239-230 1/2 Saturday to win the team wrestling title at the Class 3A Mount Carmel Regional on Saturday.
Mount Carmel advances as a team to the York Sectional on Feb. 22. The Caravan qualified all 14 of their wrestlers, including six champions, for Friday and Saturday's Leyden Sectional.
The top three wrestlers in each weight class advance to the sectional.
Carlos Hernandez (112 pounds), Mike Mizaur (125), Brendan Hall (130), Tyler Argue (140), Kevin Skryzpiec (145) and Ricky Robertson (152) all won their respective weight classes.
Also qualifying from Mount Carmel were: Jack Diana (103); Paytn Brezinski (119); Jovanni Sams (135); Mike DiNardo (160); Sterling Hicks (171); Jim Mickens (189); Devid Denne (215); and Amani Brown-Hall (Hwt.).
Class 2A Joliet Catholic Regional: Illiana Christian's Mark Meekma (152) and Mark Lyzenga (189) advanced to the Lincoln-Way West Sectional.
As a team, Illiana Christian was seventh with 67 points. Lincoln-Way West won with 236 points.
Class 1A Peotone Regional: Four Grant Park-Beecher wrestlers advanced to the Plano Sectional.
Kevin McNally (135 pounds), Phil Salmen (140), Devin Mahnke (145) and John Banasiak (152) all finished in the top three to advance.
Boys Basketball
Seton Academy 60, Gordon Tech 58: Russell Robinson's 20 points led the Sting (17-6) past the Rams in a Catholic League crossover.
Marian Catholic 46, St. Viator 31: John Rhode and Robert Coles had nine points each to lead the Spartans (10-14, 5-5) to an East Suburban Catholic Conference win over the Lions.
Tyler Ulis added eight points, nine assists and three steals as Marian limited St. Viator to 11 field goals. Brian Gates added eight rebounds.
Mount Carmel 57, New Trier 45: Tracy Abrams scored 17 of his 19 points in the second half to lead the No. 4 Caravan (17-4) past the Trevians at the Loyola Academy Shootout.
Wyn Bradley and Alex Austin had nine points each. Mount Carmel trailed 13-9 after one quarter and 25-21 at halftime. It took a 35-34 lead after three quarters and outscored New Trier 22-11 in the fourth quarter.
Bradley-Bourbonnais 53, Thornridge 50: Sinclair Stevenson led the Falcons (7-13, 2-7) in the SouthWest Suburban Red loss to the Boilermakers.
Girls Basketball
Beecher 57, Watseka 44: Amari Griffin's 21 points and 17 rebounds led the Ladycats (20-6) to the win over the Warriors.
Rachel Lee had 12 points and Meghan Jacobson added 10.
Marian Catholic 62, St. Viator 41: Jasmine Matthews and Simone Law had 17 and 16 points, as the No. 1 Spartans (23-4, 7-0) remained undefeated in the East Suburban Catholic Conference with a win over the Lions.
Law had 15 rebounds, while Jamie Johnson added nine points and four rebounds. Alanna Ferry had five steals.
De La Salle 42, St. Francis de Sales 36: Tyler Brown and Isis Mance had nine rebounds and 14 rebounds each, but the Pioneers fell to the Meteors in the GCAC White Tournament.
Boys Swimming
SouthWest Suburban Blue Meet: Luke Dobben won two individual events to lead Homewood-Flossmoor to a second-place finish.
The Vikings had 246 points. Sandburg won with 323.
Dobben won the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.01) and 500 freestyle (4:48.95). Kevin Kuchta was second in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.10) and the Vikings took second in the 400 free relay (3:21.22).
Girls Bowling
Andrew Sectional: T.F. South was 10th with 4,804 pins and Crete-Monee was 14th (4,430) as neither school qualified an individual for the state meet.
