SATURDAY'S ILLINOIS PREP ROUNDUP: Mt. Carmel wrestlers win regional title; advance 13 to sectionals
The Mount Carmel wrestling team had six champions and placed in every weight class as it won the Class 3A Mount Carmel Regional on Saturday.
The Caravan, who won their 12th straight regional title, advanced 13 wrestlers to next week's De La Salle Sectional as the top three wrestlers in each weight class advance. The team advanced to the Oak Park-River Forest Team Sectional on Feb. 21 as it won with 243 1/2 points.
The Caravan's Jack Diana (106 pounds), Mike Mizaur (132), Bryce Brill (145), Notay Jackson (160), Jimmy Mickens (182) and David Denne (220) were all champions.
Class 3A Andrew Regional: Homewood-Flossmoor's Keith Smith won the 170-pound title and the Vikings were fourth as a team with 102 1/2 points.
The Vikings advanced six to next weekend's Lincoln-Way Central Sectional. Mike Burke (106 pounds), Heath Weatherspoon (126), Cameron Beale (160), Faraan Brantlry (182) and Donnie Bell (195) also advanced.
Bloom Township's Lavonte Blackful (135), Shijuan Rogers (170) and Aaron Theodile (285) also advanced.
Class 2A Washington Regional: T.F. North's LeByron Collins won the 170-pound title and the Meteors were third in the team standings with 119 points.
Teammates Isran Mejia (160), LeBrandon Collins (182) and DeAndre Fox (285) also qualified for the Lemont Sectional.
Thornridge advanced Demitrius Taylor (113), Raekwon Brown (126), Kojo Cheatam (152) and Brian Richey (170), as did Washington's James Chance (195).
Class 2A Lincoln-Way West Regional: Marian Catholic's Nate Jackson and Crete-Monee's Travelle Smith were champions at 170 and 220 pounds respectively.
Crete-Monee also qualified Rasheed Flowers (170), Kyle Tilley (182) and Austin Rosdenfeldt (285) for the Lemont Sectional. Marian's Frank Voltatomi qualified at 138.
Class 1A Manteno Regional: Illiana Christian's Zach Groen (170 pounds) and Grant Park-Beecher's Devin Mahnke (182) were regional champs and advance to next weekend's Plano Sectional.
Also advancing from Illiana Christian were: Lucas Miedema (113); Adam Duesing (120); Dave Duesing (126); Michael Waldmarson (145); Kyle Haan (152); and Xavier Scott-Reed (285).
Girls Basketball
Marian Catholic 62, St. Viator 42: Megan Walsh's 15 points, six rebounds and seven steals led the No. 2 Spartans (17-11, 5-2) to the East Suburban Catholic Conference win over the Lions.
Boys Basketball
Seton Academy 64, Winnebago 57: The Class 2A No. 1 and Times No. 2 Sting (19-4) made seven 3-pointers in picking up the road win.
Kamal Shasi led a balanced scoring attack with 11 points. Jordan Foster and Curtis Cross had nine points.
Thornridge 60, Lincoln-Way West 44: Antonio Woods' 25 points led the Falcons (9-11, 4-5) to the SouthWest Suburban Red win.
Girls Gymnastics
Neuqua Valley Sectional: Homewood-Flossmoor's Ciara Adkins qualified for Monday's Hinsdale Central Sectional in the uneven bars, floor exercise and all-around.
