Both Beecher and Illiana Christian boys and girls cross country teams on Saturday qualified for the state meet, held Nov. 5 at Peoria's Detweiller Park.
Beecher will participate in the Class 1A race with Illiana in Class 2A.
In the boys race at the Class 1A Lisle Sectional, the Bobcats' Grant Nykaza was the overall winner in 16 minutes, 5 seconds. Teammate Aaron Borgman was third (16:47) as Beecher, the defending Class 1A state champ, finished fourth as a team with 164 points. Latin School won the team title with 84 points.
The Beecher girls were also fourth with 119 points, behind a victory from Westmont with 44 points. Beecher's Larissa Swanson was sixth overall (20:19). Teammate Paige Wehling was 22nd (21:15), while Theresa Hoge (21:25) and Jade Dooley (21:25) were 25th and 26th respectively.
The Illiana Christian girls and boys each finished third at the Class 2A Nazareth Academy Sectional, which was held at Niles West High School, and punched their ticket to Peoria.
In the boys race, the Vikings placed third, fifth and ninth with finishes from Matt Hall (3:15.40), Tony Wondaal (15:55.51) and Mylo Dixon (16:09.67).
The Vikings had 59 points and Glenbard South won with 38 points.
Marian Catholic junior Noah Brim qualified as an individual, finishing 25th (16:44.50).
Montini won the girls race with 30 points.
The Vikings girls were led by Alexa Beezhold's seventh-place finish (18:59.16). Emma Pawlowski was 14th (19:30.13) and Kristen Brink was 22nd (19:50.05).
Teammates Alex Clausing (20:01.35) and Chloe Porter (20:11.21) were 27th and 33rd respectively.
At the boys Class 3A Quincy Sectional at Westview Golf Course, T.F. South's Dylan Angell was 18th overall (16:02) and Homewood-Flossmoor's Cahron Cross was 19th (16:02). Both qualified for the state meet.
Football
Oswego 35, Thornton 13: The Panthers (8-2) used a 21-point second quarter to beat the Wildcats (6-4) in a Class 7A first-round game.
Boys Soccer
Class 1A state finals: Alex Rinella scored both goals Quincy Notre Dame beat Lisle 2-1 for the state championship at the Corn Crib in Normal.
Francis Parker beat Warrensburg-Lathan 2-1 for third place.
