Chesterton cruised to a first-place finish at the LaPorte Sectional with 332.5 points behind 10 champions and four runners-up.

Brandon Bolin (106 pounds), Ryne Beckman (152), Diego Lemley (160), Cade Girgenti (182), Lucas Davison (195) and Eli Pokorney (285) all recorded wins via pin for the Trojans. Ethan Kaiser (120) won by major decision while Nick Winland (132), Brock Ellis (145), Evan Bates (170) all won by decision.

LaPorte's Ian Nelson (113) and Kyle Simpkins (220) notched wins by decision and teammate Skyler Gomez (126) added a win via major decision. The Slicers were second with 232 points.

Valparaiso's Ian Dembowski won via decision at 138.

Boys basketball

Gavit 40, Highland 39: Justyn McClinton scored a game-high 18 points for the Gladiators (4-12) as they edged the Trojans.

George Tucker III added eight points, six rebounds and three steals for Gavit.

Tyler Scheidt had 14 points and eight rebounds for Highland (10-8). Tyler Brankin had 11 points and five steals.

Marquette Catholic 67, Winamac 44: Chandler Goodwin scored 23 points to lead the Blazers (7-12) over the Warriors. Colin Kenney added 16 points, while Jon Andershock had 10.

Knox 52, Kouts 46: Brent Wireman knocked down five 3s and scored a team-high 20 points for the Mustangs (9-6) in the loss.

Jake Stewart added seven points and 10 rebounds for Kouts. Tyler Heimberg had 10 points and three assists.


Pirate Pride Invitational: Host Merrillville took second place put of nine teams with 107.975 points. Hobart was fifth with 94.2 and Lowell was seventh with a 90.875. Columbus East won the invite with a 109.875.

Abby Smith took second in the all-around with a 36.05 for the Pirates, adding a third on bars. Cheyenne Roberts won on beam (9.4) for Merrillville and was third in the all-around. Cryst'n Morgan was second on vault with a 9.2.

Hobart's Mia Clark tied for third on floor with a 9.425.
