The Portage boys basketball team defeated Connersville 53-41 to capture the consolation championship of the Bob Wettig tournament Saturday in Richmond.
Jacob Bearss posted 13 points and six rebounds, while Michael Lattanzi recorded 12 points and four assists for the Indians (7-4). Portage won three in a row after an opening loss to Floyd Central, defeating Rock Creek Academy, Greenfield-Central and Connersville.
Caston Shootout: Zach VanHook poured in 19 points to lead the Red Devils (8-1) over the hosts 58-20 in the championship game.
Though no other player scored in double figures for Lowell, the Red Devils clamped down defensively, holding Caston to no more than seven points in any quarter.
VanHook's 13 points led a quartet of Red Devils in double-figures in a 56-36 semifinal win over Northfield. Billy Barker and Eric Zukauskas added 12 points each, while Jayson Savich chipped in 10.
Northfield was held to single-digit scoring in all but the fourth quarter.
Washington Township 82, South Bend Career Academy 19: Senior guard Brandon Adkins scored 16 points and handed out five assists to lead Washington Township (5-2) in a lopsided victory over winless South Bend Career Academy. Junior guard Alex Lowther scored 14, while Nathan Line and Bryce Pappas added 10 apiece for the Senators, who never trailed.
Games postponed: Four games were wiped out by the frigid weather and threat of heavy snow.
North Newton at Delphi was postponed, and no makeup date was given. South Bend Washington at Crown Point was postponed and rescheduled for Jan. 25. Highland at Lafayette Jeff, and Hobart at Elkhart Memorial were also postponed.
Covenant Christian 38, Lakeland Christian 25: Renae Buiter scored 12 points to lead the Knights (7-4) past the host Cougars (4-8) in the Lakeland Christian Classic.
Kankakee Valley 50, West Central 42: Bethany Jansma notched 21 points as the Kougars (7-4) handed the host Trojans (9-1) their first loss in the finals of the Winter Classic. Breanna Toppen backed Jansma with 11 points.
Lake Central 76, Morton 32: Tara Zlotkowski had 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting, and the Indians jumped to a 25-0 first quarter lead en route to a 76-32 rout of Morton. Lindsay Kusbel added 11 points for L.C (13-1).
Wheeler 54, North Newton 25: Shannon Eden had a game-high 17 points to lead the balanced Bearcats (4-8, 4-1) to a Greater South Shore Conference win over the Spartans (2-7, 1-4). Four Wheeler players scored in double figures as Allie Stevenson had 11 points, while Katie Reif and Courtney Mockler added 10 points each.
North Newton was led by Skyler Belt's six points.
Knox 76, Westville 31: Mary Parkman scored nine points in a loss for the Blackhawks (0-12).
Game postponed: Merrillville at Penn was postponed due to the threat of heavy snow. No makeup date has been scheduled.
Boys cross country
Several local athletes honored by IATCCC: Fourteen local boys cross country runners were part of the IATCCC All-State Team, including six first-team selections.
Anthony Didion (LaPorte) and Brian Blaylock (Lowell) made the Class 4A first team; Salvador Cordova (Bishop Noll) made the Class 2A first team, and Bryan Flannery (South Central), Nate Rhodes (LaCrosse) and Ben Savage (Morgan Township) made the Class A first team.
Tommy Bolanowski (Munster), Ari Coulopoulos (Valparaiso), Tyler Gray (Crown Point), Andrew Jankowski (Valparaiso), Ryan Kepshire (Crown Point) and Ryan Kritzer (Munster) were 4A honorable mention selections. Joel O'Shea (Wheeler) was named in 3A, while Michael Farrell (Kouts) was named in A.
