Washington Township downed host and four-time defending champion Hebron 25-19, 25-22, 28-30, 25-22 to win the Porter County Conference boys volleyball tournament championship Saturday night.
Bryce Pappas led a balanced attack for the Senators (15-1) with 12 kills, one more than Kyle Titus. Evan Short and Chase Pfeiffer connected for nine each. Short also registered 11 block kills. Joe Nugent made 47 assists and nine block kills.
Ryan Daniel and Matt Hernandez each put down nine kills for the Hawks.
In the semifinals, Washington overcame a first-game loss to get past Boone Grove, 20-25, 28-26, 25-11, 25-18. Pappas and Titus led the way with 14 and 12 kills, respectively, overcoming 23 kills by the Wolves' Andrew Foster.
Hebron outlasted Morgan Township in a grueling five-game marathon, 27-25, 26-28, 28-26, 28-30, 15-8. Brad Blank pounded 25 kills for the Hawks, while Aiden Heinold scored 18 for the Cherokees.
North Montgomery Invitational: Chesterton reached the finals where the Trojans lost to Northview, 17-25, 25-22, 15-8.
Chesterton (19-11) defeated Fishers, Lafayette Jefferson and Lebanon to advance.
Sammi Ostrom led the Trojans with 22 kills and 10 solo blocks. Emily Marcus notched 12 kills and 36 digs, while Sara Tarnowski had 26 digs. Aubrey Nagdeman and Jessica Urycki each registered 10 kills.
Kennedy Baltus (39) and Shelby Snyder (33) topped Chesterton in assists, while Jordyn Moleski came up with 51 digs and Ashley Hecimovich served five aces.
Lafayette Central Catholic 28, Rensselaer 27: Two missed PAT kicks and a pair of failed two-point conversion runs cost Rensselaer (6-2) an upset win over Central Catholic (7-1) on Friday.
Ty Preston's 12-yard touchdown pass to Luke Schreder with 1:00 left to play won it for L.C.C.
Rylan Arihood had two rushing touchdowns for the Bombers, Avery Walker caught a TD pass from Dylan Wright, Luke Robertson kicked an 18-yard field goal and Beau Boswell returned a blocked punt for a score.
