SATURDAY'S ROUNDUP: Whiting boys hang on to beat Westville
Five Whiting players scored in double figures as the Times No. 10 Oilers held off Westville for a 62-56 boys basketball win Saturday night.
Nick Filipek and Matt Dvorscak scored 14 points each for Whiting (6-0). Gio Cruz added 12 points, while Matt Filipek and Caleb Strabavy poured in 11 points each.
The Blackhawks (0-4) were led by Don Warnke's 17 points. Kevin Stone-Tharp and Christian Porter scored 12 points apiece.
North Central 75, Bowman Academy 72: The Class 2A No. 9 and Times No. 7 Eagles gave the Class 4A top-ranked Panthers all they could handle, but came up short.
North Central made two free throws with 14.4 second left to take a 73-72 lead. Bowman's DeJuan Marrero had given Bowman a 72-71 lead on a put back with 25.5 seconds left.
After the North Central free throws, Bowman turned the ball over with 4.3 seconds left and the Panthers scored at the buzzer for the final tally.
Carlos McCormick led Bowman with 22 points, including six 3-pointers. Marrero had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Bishop Noll 69, Lowell 50: A 38-24 second-half surge led the No. 3 Warriors (4-0) past the Red Devils (2-2).
Ronnye Beamon led Noll with 25 points and Dean Danos added 20. For Lowell, Zack Van Hook scored 19 points.
Morton 73, Griffith 49: Vasha Davis pumped in 18 points and Vernon Brooks chipped in 14 to go with his five steals and four assists in the rout of Griffith (0-3).
Jason Griffin added 12 points for Morton (2-3). For the Panthers, Austin Brown led with 16 points.
Valparaiso 63, South Bend Clay 52: John Mosser and Andrew Kittridge each scored 13 points as the Vikings downed the Colonials.
Tyler Doane added 10 for Valparaiso (4-1).
Roosevelt 71, Indianapolis Metropolitan 57: Michael Jenkins scored a team-high 28 points as the visiting Panthers (2-2) defeated the Pumas (1-7). Christopher Porter added 14 points and four steals.
Hobart 56, Gavit 36: Jose Robles' 10 points led the Brickies (2-2) past the Gladiators (0-4).
Gavit was led by 11 points from Shalon Bell.
Kankakee Valley 63, North Newton 57: Brett Walther's 29 points powered the Kougars past the Spartans. Dustin Ketelaar added 14 points, and Justin Eger 12 for K.V. North Newton got 20 points from Austin Williams, 16 from Cody Balog and 12 from Cody Wedding.
Bremen 55, South Central 50: Marcus Kammrath and Steven Williams each scored 10 points, but the visiting Lions (1-2) edged the Satellites (2-2).
Washington Township 73, Oregon-Davis 60: Garrett Short tossed in 25 points and Jacob Holcomb contributed 19, including 12 of 13 from the foul line, to pace the Senators (2-3) past the Bobcats. Luke Lipinski picked up 11 points for Washington.
Girls Basketball
Bishop Noll 49, Lake Station 40: Lisette Herrera's 18 points and nine steals led the Warriors (6-1, 3-1) to the Greater South Shore Conference win over the Eagles (2-5, 0-3).
Elena Palomo had 12 rebounds and six points.
Joanna Dwyer led Lake Station with 17 points and Amber Dwyer added 13 points.
Whiting 56, River Forest 12: A 17-2 first quarter powered the host Oilers (6-2) past the Ingots (1-6). Citlali Lopez led the way with 17 points, Brianna Blackwell added 15, and Abby Bondi had 14. Isabel Sandoval grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and Bondi had seven.
South Bend St. Joseph's 64, E.C. Central 53: Andrianna Moore's game highs of 23 points and 13 rebounds weren't enough for the Times No. 8 Cardinals (5-2), who also got 14 points from Shanterra Jones and 12 from Tiajaney Hawkins.
Kouts 47, Morgan Township 30: Lexi Sippel led three players in double figures with 18 points as the host Fillies (5-2, 2-0) defeated the Cherokees (3-6, 0-2) in Porter County Conference play. Sippel also had four assists, four rebounds and three steals.
Teammate Katie Parks had 12 points and four rebounds, while Jenna Jessen scored 10 points, with four rebounds and two assists.
Trina Coleman had 11 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals. Sammie Meschede added 10 points and nine rebounds.
North Judson 42, Washington Township 31: Maddy Johnson had 10 points and eight rebounds, but the Bluejays (5-2) defeated the host Senators (1-9).
Covenant Christian 56, Clark 33: Behind 15 points and eight steals from Sarah Lentini, the host Knights (5-3) easily cruised. Jennifer Heerema and Amy Hamstra scored 12 each, and Rachel Schurman added 10 points.
Angelica Rojas' 21 points led Clark (0-8).
Boys Swimming
Portage 97, Highland 89: Mikey Janes (200 IM, 100 fly) won two individual events as the No. 8 Indians upset the No. 2 Trojans.
Chris Dabkowski (200 free, 400 free) won two events for Highland.
Penn 115, Lake Central 71: Andrew Reeseman won the 100-yard butterfly and Brandon Egebrecht the 100 back as the No. 4 Indians fell to the Kingsmen.
Girls Swimming
Griffith Invitational: Wheeler won nine of the 12 events to capture the team title with 155 1/2 points. Kankakee Valley was second wtih 104 1/2.
Wheeler's Sara Helmerich (200- and 500-yard freestyle), Danielle Radosevich (100 fly, 100 back) won two individual events each. Teammates Audrey Schell (200 IM), Katie Wong (100 free) and Allison Bolde (100 breast) were also winners. The Bearcats won the 200 medley and 200 free relays.
Kankakee Valley's Madison Babicka won the 50 free, and the Kougars also won the 400 free relay.
Griffith's Shannon Kunka took the diving.
Portage 108, Highland 77: Sierra King (50 free, 100 free) and Jordan Parker (400 free, 100 back) each won two individual events as the No. 8 Indians defeated the Trojans.
Jesenia Zendejas (100 fly) and Marie Stockton won events for Highland.
Penn 119, Lake Central 67: Shelby Carroll was the lone winner for the No. 4 Indians in a loss to Penn.
Wrestling
Rensselaer Super Duals: The host Bombers went 5-0 and had four wrestlers go undefeated.
Hunter Hickman (132 pounds) and Jeffrey Martin (138) were both 5-0, and Skyler Ringen (145) and Jay Resendez (152) both won all four of their matches.
River Forest went 2-2 as Brian Brown was 4-0 at 126.
Hebron went 0-4.
South Bend Washington Super Duals: Bishop Noll's Damian Gomez was undefeated at 160 pounds as the Warriors went 0-5.
Football
Columbus East's Kiel chosen Mr. Football: Columbus East quarterback Gunner Kiel is The Indianapolis Star's choice for Mr. Football in 2011.
As a senior, the 6-foot-4, 215-pound Kiel led his team to a 12-2 record and a Class 4A semistate appearance, passing for 2,696 yards and 28 touchdowns while also rushing for 479 yards and 11 TDs.
Kiel received 29 of the 48 votes cast for the state's highest individual honor in the sport as selected by the Indiana Football Coaches Association. Warren Central defensive tackle Sheldon Day was the runner-up with nine votes. Lafayette Central Catholic two-way standout Danny Anthrop was third with eight votes.
Kiel had committed to attend Indiana but in October, about 10 weeks after his original decision, decided to re-open his recruitment. The Star said he's now likely to attend one of four schools: LSU, Notre Dame, USC or Vanderbilt.
