ST. JOHN | Sometimes a small conversation can turn into something big.

That's what happened for Lake Central junior softball player Lizzie Seymour. She was seen in Chicago at a showcase tournament by George Mason softball coach Joe Verbanic.

She visited the Colonial Athletic Association school located just outside Washington D.C. in the early fall. Seymour verbally committed to play at George Mason on Tuesday.

"I liked the atmosphere," Seymour said on Friday night. "It's in the suburbs but not far from a big city. It felt like home. I was comfortable there."

Seymour has played shortstop for the Indians since her freshman season. She was a Times First-Team All-Area player last spring when she batted .416, scoring 36 runs and knocking in 23 RBIs. She also had five doubles and four home runs.

"We're real proud of her," L.C. softball coach Jeff Sherman said on Friday. "She's worked hard to get an opportunity like this. She's been a great player for us and I'm glad we have her for two more seasons."

Seymour also received offers from Minnesota, Radford and UIC.

While she surely would've gotten more attention from other universities, George Mason won out.

"Well, the whole recruiting process takes so long," she said. "I found a school that I loved. So I went with it."

Seymour is also a talented basketball player for the Indians. But she has yet to play because of an injury.
