UNION MILLS| Both Mollie and Maggie Lindeman came up big for Hebron in Friday’s first round of the Porter County Conference softball tournament. Maggie was 2 for 4 and had three RBI’s, while Mollie struck out 10 and gave up three hits in the Hawks’ 4-0 win against South Central.
“The first two times at bat, I was really mad because we weren’t scoring or getting any runs,” said Maggie Lindeman, who struck out twice in her first two at bats. “Coach McLindon told me to settle down, and I did.”
With bases loaded and no outs in the sixth inning, Maggie singled to center field scoring Kyle Doelling to put the Hawks up 1-0. She singled again in the seventh to left field, and an error by Kayla Pritchard allowed Doelling and Rachel Pauer to score, giving the Hawks a 4-0 lead.
“She was absolutely huge today,” Hebron coach Mike McLindon said. "She came up in some spots, and we’ve been working on her hitting. She’s such a hard worker.
"She did an outstanding job, and came up in the clutch."
Meanwhile, Mollie Lindeman only allowed three hits, struck out 10 and walked three in seven innings of play.
“She’s been dialed in lately,” McLindon said. "She’s playing at a high level, and goes out there and works hard."
South Central (13-7) only put six runners on base and did not advance past second. Their defense got three consecutive outs, all with the bases loaded, after Maggie Lindeman’s single gave Hebron the lead. The Satellites stopped runners from scoring on throws from shortstop Jaren Lynch to catcher Cali Young, and Lauren Capps caught a Mollie Lindeman fly ball to end the inning.
“It s great that our outfielders knew to make a play, and that our infielders knew to make a play at home,” South Central coach John Hall said. “All the girls out there were seniors, except for the pitcher, and they know the situations and know what they mean."
Madisyn Walter gave up seven hits, struck out three, walked two and had one hit for the Satellites. Lynch and Sam Jackson each had one hit.
“Their pitcher kept us off balance and got us chasing some things,” McLindon said. "That’s not what we wanted to do, and it took us a little longer than I had wanted to make adjustments, but they did.
"My girls kept fighting, their girls kept fighting, it was a good conference softball game, and great game for an opening tournament game.”
Doelling and Pauer each added two hits for Hebron (16-3). They advance to play the winner of Hanover Central-Washington Township Saturday morning.
