CHESTERTON | Vanessa Krause admitted that she wasn't at her best Thursday night, but that didn't stop the Chesterton freshman from making an impact.
Krause set a sectional record in the 100-yard fly (56.25 seconds) and also took the top seed in the 50 free (24.17) during the preliminaries.
"I stayed up late doing homework (Wednesday night)," said Krause, who broke the 2004 mark by Chesterton's Christy Grcevich (57.81). "I'll get a better night's sleep for (Saturday's finals)."
State No. 4-ranked Chesterton paved the way for a 14th consecutive sectional crown by notching nine top seeds. Senior Julia Campbell is the top seed in the 200 (1:55.7) and 500 free (5:06.14), while classmate Kate Curley is top-seeded in the 200 individual medley (2:08.9) and 100 back (1:00.13).
Chesterton coach Kevin Kinel also thought his team was not at their peak level in the prelims.
"We haven't really had an off meet like this all season," he said. "They always seem to come on, and I think they will be ready for Saturday."
South Central senior Tori Klimczak hopes for a repeat performance in the finals after securing her first-ever top seed, finishing in 54.53 in the 100 free. She's also seeded third in the 50 free (25.14).
"It makes me excited for Saturday," said Klimczak, who has never qualified for the state meet. "I was just trying to make the top eight."
Hobart sophomore Kaylee Gubricky earned the top spot in the 100 breast (1:09.76). She suffered a stress fracture to her right leg during cross country season and didn't begin training for the event until the last month.
"This was a big time surprise," said Gubricky, whose previous best time was 1:11 from last season. "It shows that I can do this. My goal is now 1:08 and the school record. I hope to also get to state."
