Beecher's Grant Nykaza had the best time in the 1,600-meter run Thursday at Class 1A boys state track meet preliminaries at Eastern Illinois.
Nykaza, the defending champ, ran 4:23.45. Tremont's Connor Ehnle had the second-best time (4:26.26). Nyakaza will run in Saturday's finals. He also is scheduled to run in the 3,200.
Seton Academy's 800 relay team of Deonte' Garnd0err, Shaquile Jones, Brandon Rogers and Darius Caffey were sixth in their heat (1:34.37) and did not qualify for the finals. The 400 relay team was disqualified.
IHSA meet: Marian Catholic's Kyle Scheffers is the lone local player still competing after Thursday's first-round action in the northwest suburbs.
He will compete in the consolation bracket and will face De La Salle's Steven Hill today at Wheeling High School.
Scheffers won his first two matches by defeating Lincoln Park's Ransom Braaten 6-1, 6-3 and Oswego's Jason Koesler 6-1, 6-1.
He lost in the third round to Deerfield's Jack Kasbeer 7-6 (6), 2-6, 6-4
Homewood-Flossmoor's Jeremy Miller lost his first match, but won two consolation matches before falling 6-2, 6-0 to Glenbrook North's Will Sauser.
The H-F doubles team of Alex Eng and Danny Kopas also lost two of their three matches and are eliminated from the tournament.
The duo lost their first match 6-4, 6-2 to Warren's Matt Matheny and Samuel Gudeman. They then beat Chicago Christian's Seth Hamstra and Austin Vander Veld 6-1, 6-4. Eng and Kopas were eliminated 6-0, 6-7 (5), 6-1 by Lincoln-Way East's Ty Scaletta and Rohan Piska.
Tim LaVelle and Patrick Murday lost both of their matches falling to Hinsdale Central's Alex Hagermoser and Peter Henegan 6-4, 6-1, and to Maine West's Dominic Budzik and George Stoitzev 6-4, 6-4.
Crete-Monee's Kevin Zych also lost both of his matches. Normal U-High's Sam Totten beat Zych 6-0, 6-0 and Brooks' Trivon Wells topped Zych 6-1, 5-7, 6-1.
Postponement: The Class 3A Illiana Christian, 4A T.F. North and 4A Lincoln-Way Central regional semifinals were postpone Thursday due to inclement weather.
At Illiana, the host Vikings will play Bremen at 4:30 p.m.
At T.F. North, Lockport and Marist will play at 4:30 p.m. today, followed Homewood-Flossmoor and Marian Catholic at 7 p.m.
At Lincoln-Way Central, which was postponed for the second straight day, Lincoln-Way North and Shepard will play at 4:30 p.m. today, while Crete-Monee will take on Lincoln-Way Central at 7 p.m.
T.F. South golf outing: The T.F. South booster club's annual golf outing will be June 2 at Lincoln Oaks Golf Course.
The outing is a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Dinner, raffles and awards are at 5:30 p.m. It is a best-ball, scramble format.
The cost is $100 for lunch, golf and dinner. Dinner only is $25.
