It's not often a pitcher will toss a no-hitter and lose the game, but T.F. South's Alex Schell was a victim of that tough luck Thursday.
Schell was cruising during the early and middle innings against Shepard, but he ran out of gas late, gave up seven walks, and the Astros held on for a 1-0 win.
Schell also had a double, the only hit of the game for the Rebels (12-9, 9-6 SSC Blue).
Argo 5, T.F. North 4: Bill Wilson and Mike Steele each drilled solo home runs for the Meteors (11-14, 2-11 SSC Blue), while Moise Mendoza drove in two runs in the loss.
Homewood-Flossmoor 9, Lincolnway East 8 (8 innings): Mike Kendrick executed a suicide squeeze that scored Derrion Thomas in the top of the eighth that gave the Vikings (10-9, 5-4) a SWSC win. David Klemp went 2-for-4 and scored a run, and Kendrick reached base twice via walks.
Beecher 3, Peotone 1: Zach Aring struck out 13 and threw a five-hit shutout to lead the Bobcats (10-11) to a win over the Blue Devils.
Jacob D'Anna, Cameron Morgan and Anthony Olszewski each scored for Beecher.
Illinois Lutheran 5, Grant Park 2: Sam Geraci struck out the last hitter with the tying runs on base to preserve a River Valley Conference win for the Chargers (16-2, 6-1).
Grant Farmer fanned 12 in 6 1/3 innings. Jared Buzan and Jayson Williams drove in two runs in the top of the seventh.
Downers Grove North Sectional: Homewood-Flossmoor's Cory Galen was second in singles and qualified for the state meet.
Marian Catholic 4, Illiana Christian 1: Chuck Helsel got a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles for Marian Catholic, and the Spartans (19-5) swept all three doubles matches.
Illiana Christian's Kent Pitsenberger picked up his team's only win at No. 1 singles.
Thornwood 14, Thornton 4: Hannah McPherson struck out six and was 2-for-4 as the Thunderbirds (3-12, 1-7) beat the Wildcats in the SouthWest Suburban Red.
Marissa Villanueva and Crystal Nwaokocha also had two hits and two RBIs each.
Crete-Monee 19, Bloom Twp. 4: Melanie Lambert, Ashley Bartlett and Liz Frassinone all doubled, and Sarah Rizzo (5-3-1) struck out nine as the Warriors (9-6, 8-1) beat the Blazing Trojans in Southland Athletic Conference play.
Grant Park 18-15, Illinois Lutheran 5-5: Amanda Buzan had two hits in the first game, and Sam Sievert had two in the nightcap, but the Chargers dropped a pair to the Dragons.
Homewood-Flossmoor 13, Joliet Central 4: Angela Roberts and Kayla Butler had four hits each to lead the Vikings (3-12) to the win.
Roberts had three RBIs, and Butler had two. Kate Shereyk had three hits.
Manteno 1, Beecher 0: Sarah Crews had two of the four hits for Beecher (20-5).
Providence 3, Marian Catholic 2: Alex Nickel had two hits and Allison Spence struck out six, but Spartans (11-8, 6-6) fell to the Celtics in East Suburban Catholic Conference play.
Homewood-Flossmoor 1, Bolingbrook 0: Kristy Spratt scored the lone goal for the Vikings (10-6, 4-1 SWSC) off an assist from Kelly Coderre. Goalie Kim Boehm recorded her eighth shutout of the season for H-F.
Bloom Twp. 7, Rich South 1: Jasmin Vllianueva scored twice, and Jasmin Aldape had three assists to lead the Blazing Trojans (9-4, 5-0) to a Southland Athletic Conference win.
Ashanti Gray, Denise Hernandez and Andi Hernandez also scored. Maria Narcisi made four saves.
Crete-Monee 7, Rich East 1: Adrianna Vera's hat trick led the Warriors (7-6-2, 5-0) past the Rockets in the Southland Athletic Conference.
Amanda Baron and Milea Foy each scored twice.
Oak Lawn 25-25, Thornton Fractional 5-6: Julian Ayar recorded three kills, but the Spartans cruised to the win.
Marian Catholic 15, Nazareth 2: Craig Zavesky, Chris Bartok and RJ Mendoza scored three goals apiece to lead the Spartans (6-1, 1-0 East Suburban Catholic Conference) to the rout.
Nazareth was held to eight shots on goal.
