After braving the elements, Homewood-Flossmoor's girls tennis team had a successful day and is in a seven-way tie for third place at the state meet in the northwest suburbs.
Both Adesuwa Osabuohein and Faith Huckabee won in singles as did Danielle Dixon and Dana Shannon. Colleen Kenney and Allison Lessner didn't play their first-round match due to the tournament being delayed because of inclement weather. They are scheduled to face Edwardsville's Casey Bonham and Paige Sturley this morning.
Osabuohien beat Lake Park's Stephanie Lee 6-3, 6-3. Huckabee blanked Jacobs' Alina Zabolotico 6-0, 6-0. In doubles, Dixon and Shannon were 6-0, 6-2 winners over East Richland's Chelsea Pearcy and Alex Kauble.
Marian is tied for 10th with four points and got wins from Gaby Roasles and the doubles team of Giselle Beebe and Megan Melby. Rosales topped Effingham St. Anthony's Faith Hook 6-2, 6-0. Beebe and Melby won 6-4, 6-2 over Renee Breer and Elena Breer of Teutopolis.
Illiana Christian's Zhavia Gray beat Bolingbrook's Nneka Onyehaka 6-1, 7-0 (2). In doubles, Hinsdale Central's Marika Cusik and Caroline Lorenzini beat Illiana Christian's Lynnae DeJong and Rachel Blaauw 6-0, 6-1.
Hinsdale Central and Stevenson are tied for first with eight points each.
Girls Swimming
Thornton Fractional 62, Bremen 29: Thornton Fractional won 10-of-11 events, including all three relays, to defeat the Braves in South Suburban Blue meet.
Jessica Maracich, Emily Lourwood and Annie Zupan won two individual events each.
Maracich won the 200-yard freestyle (2:17.72) and 50 freestyle (27.55). Lourwood took first in the 200 individual medley (2:51.32) and 100 butterfly (1:30.11). Zupan won the 500 freestyle (6:03.09) and 100 breaststroke (1:20.78). Julia Bertrand won the 100 butterfly (1:30.11).
The team of Zupan, Lourwood, Melissa Lopez and Rachel Fionda won the 200 medely relay (2:28.02). Zupan, Maracich, Bertrand and Kristina Creighton took first in the 200 freestyle relay (2:06.18).
The quartet of Maracich, Lourwood, Samantha Romero and Jessica Flowers won the 400 freestyle relay (4:59.31).
Girls Volleyball
Beecher 25-26, Donovan 20-24: Amari Griffin's seven kills and seven blocks led the Ladycats (19-9, 10-2) to a River Valley Conference win. Rachel Lee had 16 digs. Savanna Soppet had six kills, while Brittany Weiss had nine digs and three kills.
Oak Forest 25-17-25, T.F. South 20-25-15: Crystal Lee had 11 kills, and Elise Seufert had 31 assists, but the Rebels fell to the Bengals in the South Suburban Blue. Nicole Gill put down six kills, and Danijela Jerkan had five.
Lemont 25-25, T.F. North 14-8: Devin Luster's six kills led the Meteors in a South Suburban Blue loss to Lemont. Bianca Ruiz had five digs, and Diana Maldonado added three.
News and Notes
Mount Carmel to honor 1991 team: The 1991 Mount Carmel football team, which won the Class 5A title, will be honored before tonight's home game against Providence. The game will be televised on WWME-TV (Ch. 26.3). The Caravan finished 12-2 and beat Wheaton Central 21-14.
Time change: Saturday's Crete-Monee at Rich East game will start at 1 p.m. It will be televised on a delay basis at 4 p.m. on Comcast Cable (CN 100).
Marian-Bloom Township series to take a hiatus: Because of a scheduling conflict, Bloom Township and Marian Catholic will not play each other in football in 2012.
Marian plays an eight-game East Suburban Catholic Conference schedule. The two play at 6 p.m. today at Marian. Spartans coach Dave Mattio is going for his 250th career win.
