THURSDAY'S PREP ROUNDUP: Eagle-eye shooting leads Lake Station past Covenant Christian
The Times No. 7 Lake Station Eagles (13-4) shot 57 percent from the floor and were nearly perfect from the free-throw line (10-of-11) while defeating Covenant Christian 82-51 in boys basketball Thursday.
Demetruis Adams scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, and Brian Patterson added 16 for Lake Station, which benefited from eight assists apiece from Ricky Garcia and Dwayne Haden.
Josh Lins scored a game-high 21 points, and Ross Hoek put up 19 for Covenant Christian (5-12).
Hebron 54, Kankakee Valley 41: Hebron coach John Steinhilber picked up his 150th career victory when the Times No. 5 Hawks defeated Kankakee Valley 54-41.
Damon Wallace scored a game-high 19 points for the Hawks (16-1), who won their 15th consecutive game. Cody Artuso added 11.
Brent Walther led the Kougars (4-13) with 15 points, while Dustin Ketelaar added 12.
Crown Point 61, LaPorte 51: Zach Plesac and Tom Bardeson each recorded 20 points and four assists for the Bulldogs, who pulled away late for the Duneland Athletic Conference victory. Bret Barclay snagged a career-high 13 boards for C.P. (8-8, 6-6). Josh Fleming and Austin Alcorn carried the Slicers (8-10, 5-7) with 19 and 17 points, respectively. Zach Kiger added 10.
Whiting 63, Gavit 49: A 21-9 first quarter carried the Oilers (12-6) past the Gladiators. Nick Filipek topped all scorers with 19. Whiting also got 13 from Gio Cruz and 11 from Matt Filipek. Both Filipeks hit three 3s. D.J. Jones booked 17 points with five triples for Gavit (2-14).
Kouts 49, Morgan Township 43: Max Everaert scored a team-high 13 points, and Stephen Keller added 12 as the visiting Mustangs (13-3, 5-0) remained in first place in the Porter County Conference with a hard-fought win over the Cherokees (5-14, 1-5).
Ryan Klikus had a team-high 17 for Morgan Township, while Brandon Murphy added 11.
South Central 56, Washington Township 52: Marcus Kammrath had game highs of 23 points and 10 rebounds as the visiting Satellites (7-9, 3-3) got past the Senators (4-12, 0-6) in PCC play. Garrett Walter had 11 points, while Adam Clindaniel added 10.
Brandon Adkins had a team-high 17 points for Washington Township, while teammate Greg Fadell added 15.
Lowell 79, Boone Grove 52: Zack Van Hook had 25 points and teammate Danny DeBoer 24 as the visiting Red Devils (7-10) routed the Wolves (5-10).
West Central 66, LaCrosse 52: Riley Charlesworth scored a game-high 16 points, but the visiting Tigers (2-14) lost to the Trojans (5-13).
Gymnastics
Chesterton 106.85, Merrillville 106.15: Sophomore Brandi Tuzinski won all-around (36.2) and vault (9.25) as the Times No. 3 Trojans edged the host Pirates in a Duneland Athletic Conference meet.
Teammate Marisa Myers won beam (9.4) and floor (9.4), and finished third in all-around (35.45).
Merrillville's Kristina Goodman won bars (8.85) and was second in all-around (35.8).
