Caitlinn Caddick won the 50-yard freestyle and 100 backstroke, and was on the winning 200 medley and 400 free relay teams as the Merrilville Pirates beat the Lowell Red Devils, 117-66, in a girls swimming dual Thursday night.
Lowell's Hailey Stender and Mikki Wood won two individual events each. Stender won the 200 free and 100 butterfly. Wood took first in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke. Both were on the winning 200 freestyle relay team.
Rensselaer 112, Seeger 110, Harrison 108: The Bombers' Sydney Dobson and Lauren Powell won two individual events each to lead their team to a triangular win. Powell won the 200 and 500 free, while Dobson won the 100 free and 100 backstroke. She was also on the winning 200 medley relay team.
Valparaiso 127, Highland 50: Kaitlyn Steffus won the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly, and was a member of the winning 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams for the Times No. 6 Vikings.
Portage 117, Hobart 62: The foursome of Jordan Parker, Laryssa Vaclavik, Courtney Joseph and Ali Sovkowski did a lot of damage for the Indians in their first dual meet of the season.
They started and ended the meet with respective wins in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. In between, Sovkowski won the 200 and 500 freestyles; Joseph won the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly; Parker won the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke, and Vaclavik won the 100 breaststroke.
Girls Basketball
Morgan Township 51, River Forest 13: Three Morgan Township players scored 10 points as the Cherokees routed River Forest. Trina Coleman, Brianna Leuck and Courtney Maxwell all reached double figures for Morgan (2-1). Maxwell nabbed 10 boards, while Coleman snagged nine steals and handed out four assists.
Boys Basketball
Marquette intrasquad game tonight: Marquette will host an intrasquad game tonight starting at 5:30 with the junior varsity playing the C team. The varsity will play at 7. Admission is a pair of socks, a stocking cap or gloves, which will be donated to a local homeless shelter.
Coaching
South Central announces hires: South Central has announced the hiring of Ryan Kruska as baseball coach and Patrick Fuller as softball coach.
Kruska, a captain when he played at Butler, has been an assistant at Brownsburg and Speedway. Fuller teaches at Union Township Middle School.
South Central Athletic Director Dan Klimczak said that former softball coach John Hall resigned for family reasons, and former baseball coach Ron King did so because he is moving back to Culver, his hometown, where he is expected to coach in some capacity. The Satellites won four consecutive Class A sectional titles in baseball under King. They also won the regional in 2011.
