Six area boys basketball players have been invited to participate in the 26th annual Hoosier Basketball Magazine's Top 60 workout.

The event will take place April 7 at Marian University in Indianapolis.

The area players are Lew Wallace's Charles Cooper, Andrean's Nick Davidson, Merrillville's B.J. Jenkins, Valparaiso's Jon Mosser, Bowman Academy's Antonio Pipkin and Munster's Michael Schlotman.

While not an official tryout for the Indiana All-Star team selections, All-Star coordinator Charlie Hall and All-Star coaches will be at the event to watch the state's best seniors compete.

 

Baseball

Gavit 10, E.C. Central 8: The Gladiators edged the Cardinals in a five-inning game called due to darkness.

Doug Lathan went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Gavit, while E.C. Central's D'Angelo Gonzales hit 2-for-3 with a double.

Portage 10, Jefferson (Tenn.) 0: At Chattanooga, Tyler Kniola pitched six shutout innings, allowing four singles, as the Indians rolled in their opener. Peter Psomadelis hit a grand slam, while Kevin Jones went 3-for-3 and Chris Klenk 2 for 2.

Simeon 11, West Side 1: Paco Jordan went 2-for-3 with a home run and a double, but the Wolverines jumped on Jordan early for nine runs in the first two innings, breaking the game open.

South Central 18, Marquette Catholic 0: Adam Clindaniel allowed one hit over four innings as the Satellites crushed the Blazers. JT Snyder went 3-for-3 with three RBIs.

Kankakee Valley 10, Calumet 2: Jack Myles struck out six in three innings pitching for the host Kougars, who opened their season win a win. K.V. scored at least six runs on errors by the Warriors, who lost their opening game of the season.

 

Softball

Chesterton 2, Griffith 0: Megan Tymorek tossed a one-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts to lead the Times No. 3 Trojans over the Panthers in the season opener for both schools. Jordan Wadding added a double.

Penn 7, Crown Point 6 (8 innings): The Times No. 2  Bulldogs got 15 hits at Penn but lost a close game in extra innings. Rachel Suits was 3-for-5 with two doubles, Ally Rock had two hits and one RBI and Siena Gyure hit a home run and had two RBIs in the loss.
