Beecher junior Grant Nykaza ran the second-fastest time of the day in the 1,600-meter run on Thursday at the IHSA Class 1A state meet at Eastern Illinois University.
Nykaza ran 4 minutes, 22.55 seconds, just behind Monticello's Steve Schroeder (4:21.28). The Beecher junior will compete in Saturday's finals.
Nykaza had the best class 1A sectional time as he ran 4:17.36 at the Seneca Sectional.
Seton Academy had three entries and neither advanced to Saturday's finals. Shaquil Johnson went 18 feet, 9 1/4 inches in the long jump. Teammate Reggie Confer ran 51.30 in the 400 and the Sting's 1,600-meter relay team of Shaqil Jones, Joe Johnson, Darius Caffey and Confer ran 3:35.41.
The Class 2A and 3A semifinals are today with the finals for all three classes on Saturday.
