KOUTS | Hanover Central boys track coach Steve Foulds said he expected his team to win Thursday’s Porter County Conference Meet, and that’s exactly what happened.

On the strength of five first place finishes, including a triple-victory performance from Alec Nirtaut, and five second place finishes, the Wildcats scored 141 points to win their eighth PCC Meet title in the last nine years.

Hebron tallied 109 points to finish second, while Washington Township was third with 88 points and Kouts was fourth with 87. Boone Grove took fifth place, LaCrosse sixth, South Central seventh and Morgan Township finished eighth.

“It was a roller coaster of emotions, up and down,” Foulds said. “We had some guys that really competed well.”

Nirtaut won the 400-meter dash in 51.80 seconds, and he also won the long jump with a mark of 20-feet, 4-and-1/2 inches. Nirtaut led off the winning 1600-meter relay team, and he also finished third in the 200-meter dash.

“I just went out there and ran, I wasn’t worried about anything else,” Nirtaut said. “My team was pushing me. I love having Matt (Yzaguirre) in the 400, he really pushes me.”

Kevin Roper claimed a victory for the Wildcats, who were also the round-robin champions, in the shot put, as did the 400-meter relay team of Colton Vroom, Ryan Gibson, Kevin Majka and Sam Bokodi.

Matt Yzaguirre, who anchored the 1600-meter relay squad, took second in both the 100- and 400-meter dashes and also finished fifth in the 200.

Hanover Central had at least two athletes finish in the top six in five different events.

“That’s what we count on; that’s how we have done it over the years,” Foulds said.

Hebron took three first place finishes. Jasen Egolf won the 800-meter run and also led off the 3200-meter relay team. In addition, he finished second in the 1600 and ran a leg on the 1600-meter relay team that also finished second.

Alex Shrum won the pole vault for the Hawks. Teammate Eric Barzyvki was second.

Morgan Township’s Alec Kostelnik won both the 1600- and 3200-meter runs. He finished the 1600 with a time of 4:20.24.

“I went all out in the mile because I had to run against Jasen (Egolf),” Kostelnik said. “We had a good battle.”

Stephen Keller of Kouts was a double winner. He claimed the high jump and won the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 41.33 seconds.

Washington Township’s Joe Nugent won both the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Nugent won the 100 in 11.61 seconds.
