KOUTS | South Central freshman Kyleigh Werner survived the cold and windy conditions to win three titles at Saturday's Kouts Invitational.

Werner won the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meters for the Satellites, who finished second to Bremen (184-111.5) for the girls team title. Werner picked up three of the Satellites' four event wins. Savannah Little won the 400 (1:04.23), while Taylor Johnson finished second the 100 hurdles (16.91).

"We were happy with her races today, but it's totally a complete team effort," South Central coach Rachel Werner said. "We have superb athletes, and I'm happy with all of them. Taking second to Bremen — and they're a bigger school than we are — so I'm very pleased with the girls performances overall."

Hebron's girls finished third with 91 points. Christy Reick pole vault (6 feet, 6 inches). Teammate Charity Gonzalez was second

"They used a new pole today, so that's different for them," Hawks coach Rhonda Walker said. "They did a good job."

Liz Fox finished second behind Werner in the 800, while the 1,600 and 3,200 relays both finished second.

The host Fillies came in sixth (58.5). The team was disqualified in the 3,200 relay, because one runner wore gloves.

"The girls got off to an unfortunate start with the relay, but that's a learning experience for them," Kouts coach Kevin Duzan said. "I thought — all and all — the teams competed hard."

On the boys side, Bremen pulled off the sweep by defeating defending-champion Hebron 183-98.5 for the crown.

The Hawks' Alex Shrum won the pole vault (13 -0), and teammate Kyle Schmidt won the 3,200 (10:34.30).

"I didn't know how we'd come out," Hebron coach Mike DeFries said. "We we're missing a bunch of kids, so I hoped we'd come out somewhere in the top half. To get second is pretty nice for us."

Stephen Keller won the high jump (6-4), placed second in the pole vault and 300 hurdles (41.65) to help Kouts place third with 92 points.

"We had some good individual performances and scored in a lot of events," said Duzan, who also coaches the Kouts boys team. "This is one of our biggest meets of the year besides the conference meet and sectional. You want to run well at your own invitational, and the kids were really looking forward to it. We train for these days."

Morgan Township's Alec Kostelnik won the 800 and 1,600. Lake Station's Keith Durbin won the shot put (41-9).
