HIGHLAND | According to Hobart boys track coach Ty Artherhalts, there's really one secret ingredient to winning a conference championship: depth.
The Brickie boys displayed their depth Tuesday night as they took the Northwest Crossroads title in overwhelming fashion by scoring an impressive 160.5 points, which was 57.5 more than second-place finisher Munster.
"It's really no secret. You need good depth and numbers to be successful in the dual meets," Artherhalts said. "We have good numbers from cross country, so that's what carries us in the duals."
Hobart won five events including pole vault, high jump, 200-meter dash, 400-meter relay, and 100-meter dash.
In the 200, Zac Randall took the crown with Joey Curtis taking second, but then they flip-flopped places in the 100, so that was a big bulk of the points.
"I can't say enough about our sprinters. We try to place two high in every event, but I'm very happy with how we worked," Artherhalts said.
On the girls side, Munster (159.5) took the crown by narrowly defeating KV by just 24 points with Lowell (122.5) being the only other team to score over 100 points.
The Mustangs also took home five events including 300-meter hurdles, 400-meter dash, 400 relay, 100-meter hurdles, and the 3200 relay.
Munster girls coach Rick Sluder also credited his team's depth as a key to their success.
"Whenever we had a small let down, another girl picked us up," he said. "We weren't sure if we'd win because Lowell and KV are both good and we knew coming in that they were gonna do whatever they could to win."
According to Sluder, Tuesday's conference victory was the first-ever for Munster and this gives them great confidence going into the postseason.
"I believe this is our first one," he said. "That was one of our goals this season and now it sets us up well to compete for a sectional championship."
