LAKE STATION | Brandon Armour wanted nothing more than to help continue River Forest’s control of the Greater South Shore Conference track meet.
That feeling was evidenced by Armour’s performance, winning the shot put and discus events to help the Ingots amass 141 points and win their third consecutive Greater South Shore Conference title, finishing ahead of second-place Wheeler’s 125.5 points.
“I was ecstatic,” Armour said of his performance. “I came in here just to give it my all and do my best today.”
Armour reached a personal best of 40 feet in the shot put and broke the conference record in the discus with a throw of 141 feet.
Putting personal accomplishments aside, Armour wanted nothing more than to help his team capture the conference title again.
“It feels so good,” he said. “I wouldn’t have it any other way, especially with it being my senior year, too. It’s a good way to end my senior year.”
Another key to the Ingots’ championship was James Lewis, who finished first in the high jump (6 feet), 100-meter dash (11.4 seconds) and 200-meter dash (23.1).
“I think I did pretty good,” he said. “I came here expecting to win. I didn’t want to go home a loser.”
River Forest coach Brian Wesley was impressed with how his team performed. Many of his athletes set personal records in their events.
“We faced Wheeler earlier in the season in the Wheeler Invite and they beat us there, so that was a little extra motivation for our guys,” he said. “They came out and pushed themselves.”
One big surprise for Wheeler was freshman Alex Nader, who won the 3200-meter run (10:26). He even surprised himself with his performance.
“I’m just overwhelmed,” he said. “It’s amazing. I went through my normal warm-ups and I was expecting to finish fourth or third. I’m unbelievably excited, but I would give it up to win conference as a team any day.”
