Times No. 1 Lake Central (3-1, 1-0) got a two-run double from Michelle Weber and a two-run single from Casey Ruberry to earn a 7-0 Duneland Athletic Conference softball win over LaPorte (0-2, 0-1) on Tuesday.
Lilly Del Torro struck out nine batters and pitched six innings of shutout ball to get the win.
Portage 15, Michigan City 5: Haley Hodges was 4-for-4 with a double, triple and four RBIs as the Times No. 5 Indians defeated the Wolves in the DAC opener for both schools.
Alexis Johnson was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs; Stephanie Upton was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI; Kaitlin Doud was 3-for-3 with two runs scored, and Heather Zengler went the distance with six strikeouts.
Washington Township 11, North Judson 1: Ali Cobb had two hits and scored twice as the Senators won their season opener in five innings over the Bluejays. Katherine Sullivan went the distance with 10 strikeouts.
Hobart 7, Griffith 0: Brianna Kraft connected for a triple and scored twice, going 3-for-4 for the Brickies in a Northwest Crossroads Conference shutout.
Maddy Adams doubled as part of her 3-for-4 day, scored once and drove in two runs. Pitcher Dana Clausson fanned 11 for Hobart.
Whiting 18, Calumet 0, 5 inn.: Mollie Lovasko struck out 11 over five innings to earn a season-opening win in GSSC play. She picked up support from Bichaela Brown, who drove in a pair of runs and scored twice, and Abby Bondi, who scored three runs and added an RBI. Lily Hale and Veronica Aguilera each doubled for the Oilers.
Kankakee Valley 3, Lowell 2: The Times No. 9 Kougars (2-0, 1-0) got two RBIs from Morgan Cavender and Lauren Cambe pitched six and a third innings to pick up the win as K.V. opened the NCC season with a win. Lowell (2-1, 0-1) got a home run from Alyssa Pokropinski.
Morton 14, Gavit 7: The Times No. 8 Govs (1-1) got their first win of the season as Vivian Peterson had six RBIs and Angelica Justiniano struck out six to get the win.
Morgan Township 26, Oregon-Davis 3: Freshman Jake Koselke had two grand slams, two triples, 10 RBIs and five runs scored as the Cherokees (2-1) crushed the Bobcats in five innings. Will Swisher (1-0) went the distance with eight strikeouts and helped his cause with two doubles, four runs scored and three RBIs.
Griffith 11, Kankakee Valley 4: The Times No. 6 Panthers (2-0, 1-0) opened their NCC season with a win, getting two RBIs from Kody Hoese and Kyle Vuikema as both players also doubled. Jesse Smith struck out nine to pick up the win. Matt Berdine reached base all three times to lead the Kougars (2-1, 0-1).
Wheeler 4, Lake Station 1 The Bearcats won three matches in straight sets to defeat the Eagles in the regular-season and GSSC openers for both schools.
Joanna Dwyer picked up the Eagles' lone point with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles.
LaLumiere 4, Boone Grove 1: Lauren Jakubczyk's 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles was the lone victory for the Wolves.
Kouts sweeps PCC triple dual: Austin McNeill won both discus and shot put, helping Kouts defeat host Boone Grove (87.5-66.5) and LaCrosse (87-39) in a Porter County Conference triple dual. Evan Rogers added wins in the 100-meter dash and the pole vault.
Boone defeated LaCrosse 66-51 to gain a split. Austin Aguilera won the 400 and tied for first in the high jump.
The Tigers' Nate Rhodes won the 1,600 and 3,200.
LaCrosse picks up PCC sweep: LaCrosse won the final event, the 1,600-meter relay, to earn a PCC sweep over Kouts (57-53) and Boone Grove (63-60).
Kayla Moyer won the 100 and 200 for Kouts, which picked up a split with a 68-55 win over host Boone Grove.
