TUESDAY'S ROUNDUP: Bollenbacher's 41 leads Wildcats past Warriors
Nick Bollenbacher poured in 41 points, which included five 3-point field goals, while leading Hanover Central past Calumet 94-59 in boys' basketball action Tuesday night.
Max Johnson added 16 points for the Wildcats (1-2) in their first win of the season.
Joe Hymes had 17 points and Duke Bush scored 13 for the hosting Warriors in their season-opener.
South Central 38, Morgan 37: South Central withstood a second-half comeback to escape Morgan Township in a Porter County Conference nail-biter.
Marcus Kammrath topped the Satellites (1-0, 1-0) with 13 points, one more than Adam Clendaniel. Steven Williams added 10.
Ryan Klikus tallied a game-high 16 for the Cherokees (1-1, 0-1), including three third-quarter 3s that got Morgan back in it. Chase Braden backed Klikus with 12 points.
LaCrosse 53, Oregon-Davis 51: The Tigers outscored the Bobcats 17-4 in the third quarter to erase a seven-point halftime deficit. LaCrosse hung on to win despite missing 10-of-12 fourth-quarter free throws. Riley Charlesworth scored 16 points for LaCrosse, which got 10 apiece from Jimmy Ripe and Sam Culver.
Victory Christian Academy 62, Granger Christian 52: Leventes Strong poured in 34 points to power the Lions (4-0, 2-0) to a South Shore Christian Conference triumph. Rhyan Pawlicki chipped in 11 for VCA.
Girls Basketball
Hobart 42, Portage 39: The Brickies warmed up in the fourth quarter to get past the Indians. Morgan Flaharty topped Hobart with 13 points, folllowed by Grayce Roach's 10. Nicki Monahan paced Portage with 18.
Boone Grove 63, Kankakee Valley 51: Emily Bobrowski drained five 3-pointers en route to a game-high 19 points as the Times No. 3 Wolves (6-0) defeated the visiting Kougars (4-2). Bobrowski added eight rebounds and two steals.
Brittany Shaffer had 18 points, five assists, five rebounds and three steals for Boone Grove.
Lauren Stokes had a team-high 13 for Kankakee Valley, while Hailey Ruesken added 12.
Whiting 55, Washington Township 41: Citlali Lopez scored a game-high 20 points as the visiting Oilers (3-2) defeated the Senators. Abby Bondi added 13 points.
Heather Burton had a team-high 12 for Washington Township.
Griffith 41, Hebron 23: Emma Blackard's game-high 16 points helped the No. 7 Panthers (6-1) defeat the Hawks (3-3). Sammi Adams added 14.
Madison Bell had a team-high eight points for Hebron.
Covenant Christian 40, River Forest 26: Calli Beezhold scored seven points and was credited with 10 blocks as the Knights captured the win.
Freshmen Jennifer Heerema and Rachel Schurman scored nine points each.
Celeste Robles paced the Ingots (0-7) with 10 points each.
North Newton 52, Lake Station 36: Coach Bob Gonczy Earned his first win as the new head coach for the Spartans with 11 points from Carly Slayton and 10 from Haley McBrayer.
Girls Swimming
Munster 145, Griffith 38: Emily Lagestee anchored a pair of relays and won the 100-yard backstroke as Munster swam away with a Northwest Crossroads Conference win. Seahorse Taylor Merkel won the 200 individual medley as well as a pair of relays.
Griffith's Allie Meece captured the 500 free in 6 minutes, 31.83 seconds for the Panthers' only first-place finish.
Twin Lakes 115, Rensselaer 67: Sydney Dobson won the 100 backstroke and swam the first leg of the victorious 200 free relay in the Bombers' loss.
Lowell 127, Hobart 51: Rachel Smith, Mikki Wood and Kaitlin Wells were double individual winners for the Red Devils in a NCC victory.
Kaylee Gubricky captured a pair of wins for the Brickies.
Boys Swimming
Munster 142, Griffith 37: Wilson Beckman won a pair of individual events (200 free, 100 fly) and was on two relays as Munster captured the easy win. Joey Gardner also took two individual wins (200 IM, 100 back) for Munster.
Lowell 88, Hobart 67: Nolan Cook won the 200-yard freestyle, the 500 free and anchored a pair of relays as the Red Devils edged Hobart in NCC action. Tyler Morgan won the 200 individual medley and the 100 fly, while swimming a leg on the 200 medley relay.
Highland 130, Kankakee Valley 55: Stephen Castillo won two events individually (200 free and 100 butterfly) to help the Times No. 2 Trojans to the easy NCC win. Adam Johnston won the 50 free and 100 free as he and Castillo were also on the winning 200 medley and 400 free relays.
Wrestling
Whiting 39, Clark 36: Whiting captured its first four bouts by pin and Russell Eldridge captured a 5-3 victory at 220 pounds as the Oilers escaped with the rivalry win.
Whiting picked up pins at 132 pounds (Zack Szmuc), 138 (Dominic Pagan), 145 (Dylan REeves) and 160 (Edwin Martinez).
News and Notes
Sheriff to be remembered tonight: A memorial service honoring former Portage wrestling coach Bruce Sheriff will take place at 6:15 tonight. Sheriff passed away earlier in the fall. The match with Chesterton will start at 6:30.
Portage's Cole to play in national All-Star soccer game: Portage senior Donovan Cole has been invited to play in the High School All-American Soccer game Dec. 10 in Birmingham, Ala. Only 36 players in the nation were chosen to play in the contest.
