TUESDAY'S ROUNDUP: Gavit's Andrews gets double-double
Gavit's Hattie Andrews scored 19 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead her Gladiators to a 40-18 girls basketball win over Lake Station on Tuesday night. Gavit (3-0) also got 14 points from BreAnne Misner, who also added four assists, just like Andrews. The Eagles (1-1) were led in scoring by Joanna Dwyer's 11 points.
East Chicago Central 54, Portage 46: Andrianna Moore scored 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Cardinals (3-0) to the road win. Dariyelle Ricks added 11 and Shanterra Jones scored 10 in the win. This is the first time E.C.'s been 3-0 since 2004. The Indians (1-1) got 21 points from Nicki Monahan.
Hobart 48, Washington Township 21: Morgan Flaharty scored a game-high 16 points as the Times No. 10 Brickies (2-1) defeated the host Senators (0-1). Kara Cooke added 11 for Hobart.
Heather Burton and Kacie Corley each had six for Washington Township.
Rensselaer 66, North Newton 15: The Bombers (2-1) were led by Laura Tanner's 14 points, Aimee Mattocks' 12 and Emilie Ziese's 10 to get the win over the Spartans (0-2).
E.C. Central 54, Portage 46: Andrianna Moore scored a team-high 19 points as the visiting Cardinals (3-0) defeated the Indians (1-1). Dariyelle Ricks added 11 points, while Shanterra Jones had 10.
Portage's Nicki Monahan led all scorers with 21 points.
Kouts 56, Gary Lighthouse 2: Freshman Jayla Crump scored a game-high 11 points and added four rebounds as the host Fillies (2-0) defeated the Lions (0-1). Jenna Jessen added 10 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals; Lexi Sippel collected nine points and seven assists, and Katie Parks grabbed 10 rebounds.
Griffith 33, Wheeler 24: The Times No. 7 Panthers overcame a slow start by outscoring the Bearcats 24-8 in the middle quarters to prevail in a low-scoring affair. Sammi Adams notched 11 points, all in the first half, to top Griffith.
Paige Finch scored nine for Wheeler, one more than sister Nickole.
Girls swimming
Wheeler 102, LaPorte 74: Freshman Katie Wong won two individual events as the Bearcats upended No. 20-ranked LaPorte.
According to Wheeler coach Adam Klimczak, it's the first dual-meet win over a ranked school in the program's history.
Wong won the 50- and 100-yard free for the Bearcats. Danielle Radosevich captured both the 100 fly and 100 back.
Carly Jackson won the 200 and 500 free for the Slicers, while teammate Abbi Fryer won diving.
Highland 135, Griffith 48: The Trojans took all but one event, including all three relays, for a victory over the Panthers.
Highland got double wins from Marie Stockton in the 200 individual medley and 100 breast, Jesenia Zendejas in the 200 free and 500 free, and Jordan Galovich in the 500 and 100 free.
Griffith's Shannon Kunka won the diving.
Lowell 95, Kankakee Valley 91: Mikki Wood won the 100 and 200 free as the Red Devils beat the Kougars. Lowell also won two of the three relays.
Munster 142, Hobart 39: The Seahorses won every event in beating the Brickies. Nikki Smith (200 I.M., 1-00 breast) and Ashley Hwang (200 free, 500 free) took two individual events each.
Wrestling
Gavit 58, Hebron 17: David Ramirez (145) notched a pin in the Gladiators' win over the Hawks. Brandon Sanchez (220) scored a fall for Hebron.
News and Notes
Four from region on volleyball academic all-state first team: Two players each from Crown Point and Griffith were named to the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association academic all-state volleyball team.
Bulldogs Melanie and Nina Zdanowicz, and Stacie Hansen and Michelle Lesniewski from Griffith were named to the first team.
Megan Tuttle from Griffith and Brigid Scannell from Valparaiso were honorable mention.
Only seniors can be named to the ICGSA academic all-state team and must have a minimum GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have at least a 1110 on the SAT or 24 on the ACT.
Valpo boys hoops scrimmage Thursday: Valparaiso will host North Judson for a scrimmage at 6 p.m. Thursday in Viking Gym. Admission is a donation of non-perishable food item. Items will be donated to a local food pantry.
Valparaiso fall sports banquet Monday: Valparaiso's fall sports award banquet will take place at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the auditorium.
