Griffith has received the IHSAA's School Sportsmanship Award for 2016-17.

"Our coaches embrace sportsmanship as a fundamental of play. They lead by example," Panthers athletic director Stacy Adams said in a news release. "Our student athletes learn from them. When they see coaches doing the right thing, they follow their lead.

"Our mission in athletics is to develop well-rounded students. Our athletes know we expect them to exhibit the highest in sportsmanlike conduct. They did themselves and us proud."

Adams and several coaches will be recognized for this achievement at 7 p.m. today during the school board meeting in the LGI Room.

Nothing in between: LaPorte features a group of six running backs, affectionately known as the "dirt squirrels", who range in size from Detrick Merriweather (5-foot-3, 151 pounds), Caleb Kuzdas (5-5, 137) and Michael Peeples (5-6, 150) to Drayson Nespo (5-8, 170), Isaac Alexander (5-9, 181) and Gabe Chavez (5-10, 176).

"They're all little, quick twitch guys," coach Dave Sharpe said. "I feel like we have a system to maximize our talent."

What will make them dangerous in the Slicers offense is their ability to get lost behind a massive offensive line that includes Jake Thode (6-2, 278), Cesar Rosales (5-7, 275), converted tight end Kyle Simpkins (6-3, 225), Kameron Browder (6-0, 292), Felipe Marcano (5-8, 262), David Applegarth (5-10. 241) and tight end Mark Haines (6-3, 213). Even quarterback Nolan Lorenz is 6-2, 213.

"We're either huge or tiny. There's not a lot of in between," Sharpe said. "We've got big folks and little folks."
