The Hebron cross country teams wrapped up the Porter County Conference round-robin titles with double victories in Wednesday's meets at Boone Grove.
The Hawks boys ceded the top two spots to Morgan Township's Logan Redmon and Ben Savage, but took the next six places, led by freshman Scott Crawley, to prevail 23-32. They swept Washington Township 15-50.
On the girls side, Hebron downed Morgan 20-42, while Washington had just one runner. Cherokees freshman Hailey Haveck won the race, followed by Hebron's Christa Bontempo.
Boys cross country
LaCrosse 27, Kouts 28; Kouts 15, Boone Grove INC; LaCrosse 15, Boone Grove INC: Nate Rhodes finished second as the Tigers edged the Mustangs. Boone's Jon Hogg placed first, but the Wolves were one runner short of a team score.
South Central 22, Westville 33: Bryan Flannery headed a lead trio as the Satellites downed the Blackhawks. Lucas Cauley and Noah Matthys followed Flannery for S.C.
Girls cross country
Boone Grove 17, Kouts 42; Boone Grove 15, LaCrosse 45; Kouts 20, LaCrosse 36: Sarah Steinhilber, Mariah Rodriguez and Allie Hill went 1-2-3 to pace the Wolves to a double victory.
Westville 20, South Central 39: Kyleigh Werner was first across the finish line by more than four minutes, but the Blackhawks secured the next five spots, led by Molly Corder, for the team win.
Merrillville 0, Lake central 0 (Merrillville wins PK shootout 4-2): Merrillville and Lake Central tested each other's mettle for 80 minutes of regulation, 14 minutes of overtime and needed a penalty kick shootout to determine a winner.
The Pirates (4-9-3, 2-5 Duneland Athletic Conference) recorded the victory, winning the shootout session 4-2.
Bradley Brack made nine saves for the Pirates, while George Turjilo recorded four saves for the Indians.
Boone Grove 3, Bishop Noll 2, OT: Cameron Varlan scored in the extra period for the Wolves in the Northwest Indiana Soccer Conference victory. Varlan finished with a goal and an assist as teammates Nick Azevedo and Austin Aguilera added the other goals.
Gabriel Anguiano and Omar Calderon had a goal and an assist each for the Warriors. Jonathan Lozano made 16 saves for Noll.
Bishop Noll 25-25-25, E.C. Central 5-9-11: Carly Cappello's 11 kills joined 11 assists from Emily Johnson to lead the Warriors to the win. Asya Hobbs had eight kills with two blocks, and Elena Sobilo added four aces for Noll (18-5).
Charity event at today’s Gavit match: Gavit will host its annual Breast Cancer Awareness match at 6:30 p.m. today against Morton. All donations will be given to Relay for Life foundation.
LaPorte Sectional: The host Slicers and New Prairie posted 3-2 wins to advance to the finals, both getting decisive three-set victories at two doubles. The Cougars' team of Ian McSherry and Lucas Major prevailed 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 to claim the clinching point against Michigan City (3-12), while the Slicers' duo of Austin Reese and Morgan Arndt rallied for a dramatic 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 win to push LaPorte (14-7) past Marquette Catholic (13-2).
Valpo-Merrillville game to raise money for American Cancer Society: Merrillville and Valparaiso are partnering with the NFL, Colts, the Indiana Football Coaches Association and the American Cancer Society in a program called "A Crucial Catch" on Friday.
Both teams will wear their normal school uniforms, with pink accessories. Fans will have the opportunity to make a donation as they enter the stadium. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. Tickets are sale in the Valparaiso athletic office until 3 p.m. each day. Tickets are $6 each.
