Mitch Kobitz helped the Chesterton baseball team with his bat and arm Wednesday.

Kobitz tossed six innings of one-hit ball, striking out 12, and knocked in two runs to pace the Trojans to a 5-0 victory over E.C. Central. Chesterton (2-0) managed just three hits, but was the beneficiary of 10 walks.

Hobart 6, Highland 1: The Brickies' Brandon Murray struck out 15 Trojans (2-3, 1-1) and also went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored to lead host Hobart to a Northwest Crossroads Conference win. Daniel Stewart went 3-for-4 for the Brickies (3-2, 1-1) with two runs scored and an RBI.

Lake Station 8, Gavit 7: The Eagles (1-1) got two hits from Chris Szoctek, who also added two RBIs, and Kody Lemley, who drove in a run, to pick up the win.

The Gladiators (1-4) were led by Carlos Larrea, who had two hits and an RBI.

River Forest 10, Hammond 0: Omar Nunez struck out seven and allowed two hits to give the Ingots (2-2) a home win. Chris Lauderbach went 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored. Geno Flores scored twice for the Ingots.

Boone Grove 6, North Newton 4: Dean Hill worked six strong innings to earn the win for the Wolves (2-1). Caleb Narron singled twice, and Jake Wright smacked a two-run double for Boone.

Chad Schultz recorded two hits for the Spartans (0-1).

Morgan Township 8, Hammond Academy 0: Ryan Klikus tossed a one-hitter, striking out 10 for the Cherokees (3-1). Adam Rettinger (two RBIs) and Jacob Hernandez (two runs) each posted two hits.

Chicago Washington 10, West Side 0: Eight errors doomed the Cougars, who managed only a Charlie Butler single.

Wheeler 10, Hebron 5: Sam Bolla singled, doubled and drove in three runs to power the Bearcats (1-2) past the Hawks (0-2). Matt Pappas and Dustin Bogs each notched two hits and two RBIs for Wheeler.

Stephen Doelling went 3-for-4, and Mike Mikulich plated a pair for Hebron.

LaPorte 7, South Bend Adams 0: Ben Saliwanchik no-hit the Eagles (0-2), striking out 12 and walking two. Evan Miller and Francis Silfa were each 2-for-3 for the Slicers (2-3), with Silfa driving in three runs.

Michigan City 2, New Prairie 1: Ryan Washington allowed an unearned run over five innings and factored in both runs with two hits as the Wokves (2-0) edged the Cougars. Danny Lemon was also 2-for-3 for M.C.

 

Girls Tennis

E.C. Central 3, Griffith 2: The Cardinals opened their season with a victory, sweeping the singles with wins by Ashly Rodriguez, Kayla Cast and Fabiola Guillen.

The Panthers got wins from Ali Acevedo-Karina Silva and Michelle Torres-Stacy Weber in doubles.

 

Boys Basketball

Mr. Basketball from Hamilton SE for second consecutive year: Zak Irvin of Hamilton Southeastern is The Indianapolis Star's Mr. Basketball for 2013.

The 6-foot-7 forward is the second Mr. Basketball from the suburban Indianapolis school in the past two years.

The Star announced Wednesday that it awarded this year's title to Irvin, a Michigan recruit. Last year's winner was Gary Harris, with whom Irvin played for two years.

Irvin averaged nearly 19 points per game and accumulated 402 rebounds, 164 assists and 105 steal. During his three years on varsity, his teams were 59-11.

Irvin received 101 votes from Indiana coaches and media. Mishawaka Marian's Demetrius Jackson was second with 46 votes, followed by Tipton's Mike Crawford (37), Fort Wayne Northrop's Bryson Scott (26) and Cathedral's Collin Hartman (14).
