Former Lake Station football coach Mike Hepp died Tuesday night after battling pancreatic cancer for more than a year, his sister Cyndy Rastovski confirmed Wednesday.
Hepp, a 1972 Highland graduate, coached almost every sport for the Eagles, but was best known for football. He coached the program for nine seasons, going 29-63. He led the Eagles to the 1998 Class 2A sectional championship, only the second in school history.
He also coached cross country, baseball, boys basketball and boys golf. He taught and coached in the Lake Station school district for 35 years before retiring in 2012. He also taught the First Tee program at Lost Marsh for several years.
"Mike was a great inspiration for a lot of students at our school," former Lake Station athletic director Gayle Green said. "He wanted them to look beyond high school and get motivated for life's duties. You don't replace people like that. He will be dearly missed." -- Steve Hanlon
