CROWN POINT | It was a big day for brother tandems at Saturday's Crown Point Regional.
Two of four sibling combinations in the C.P. lineup, Darden and Dusty Schurg and Morgan and Tyler Kral, were among seven Bulldogs who captured titles.
"I'm really proud of him," 160-pound champ Dusty Schurg said of his freshman brother, the 113 titlist. "He's really stepped up and done really good this year."
Both Schurgs recorded pins, Darden sticking New Prairie's Brad Freestone in 2:14.
"I feel it's a huge deal," Darden said of winning as a freshman. "It's good to have my brother there. He always helps with stuff."
Not to be outdone, Dustin dispatched North Newton's Casey Sonaty in 61 seconds with a double underhook.
"When it comes to people who really like headlocks, it's hit and miss," Dustin said. "The way he started the match real aggressive, I was kind of expecting it. I knew once I got past that, I would be fine."
At 182, frosh Morgan Kral downed Michigan City's Andrew Schroeder 7-1. Minutes later, Tyler put away Lowell's Tyler Wright in 56 seconds.
Other C.P. champs were Jason Tsirtsis (145), Matt Langbehn (195), who reversed a loss to Lowell's Ryan Patterson in the sectional, and heavyweight Josh Swope.
Tsirtsis needed just over five minutes to record his technical fall of Hanover Central's Charlie Mavros and claim his fourth regional.
"To be able to dominate high-caliber guys feel pretty good," Tsirtsis said. "No matter who it is, I'm going to work my skills and if they give me an opening, I'm going to take it."
Like Tsirtsis, Hanover's Stevan Micic (106) and Paul Petrov (120) kept their perfect records intact.
Micic pinned his way through the field, needing less than three minutes total.
"I didn't take anybody for granted," Micic said. "I treat everybody the same. I just had to stick with everything I know."
Petrov was happy to open the margin on Josh Fuqua (13-2), his summer practice partner, after a 3-1 sectional match.
"All of our matches have been really close and I wanted to get some separation," Petrov said. "Top, bottom, on my feet, I felt like I was able to do everything I wanted. I want to be peaking for the state tournament series and I know after today that I can win a state title."
Chesterton's Chris Katsafaros pulled a bit of a surprise at 152 if not by beating C.P.'s Jake Fuqua, but in catching him with a spladle and pinning him in 1:55.
"I was surprised it would be there. I didn't think he'd give it," said Katsafaros, who was 0-4 against Fuqua. "Every (match), it was low scoring. I've been feeling confident. I just wanted to get that first win. It felt amazing. This is probably my biggest win."
The Bulldogs advanced 11 to the Merrillville Semistate. Lowell qualified eight with three champions -- Alex Mavros (132), Mitch Roadruck (138) and Jeremy Corcker (170).
