CROWN POINT | For Crown Point's Tyler Kral, winning first place at the Carl Carnahan Invite can sometimes be tough to put into words.
"Pride, I don't know another word for it," Kral said. "It feels good ... to be a part of something big with Crown Point wrestling and the fact that we're able to have a home tournament and see all the wrestlers come in."
Kral who improved to 19-0 on the season at 215 pounds helped lead the Bulldogs to a first-place finish Saturday afternoon at the Carl W. Carnahan Memorial Invitational. The Bulldogs won the team competition over Hanover Central 312 to 225. Hammond Morton took third place with 163 points. Crown Point's Jason Tsirtsis and Eric Roach also improved to a 19-0 record on the season and respectively finished in first place in the 140 and 145 pound weight classes.
"It's always a fun tournament for us," Crown Point coach Scott Vlink said. "It ends the first part of our season. It kind of heads us into the Christmas break, and more importantly than that, it's an opportunity for us to honor the gentleman who started wrestling at Crown Point high school, Carl Carnahan."
Morton's Josh Green captured first place in the 160 pound class and captured tournament honors for Outstanding Wrestler. Green defeated Crown Point's Dusty Schurg in the first-place match 7-5 and improved his record to 14-1 on the season.
"At the beginning of the season I was thinking of going undefeated," Green said. "At Harvest, I lost one and I got more realistic. Then I started going one match at a time, one match at a time. It kind of amazed me to come out on top first place in the tournament. It gives me a lot of confidence. It makes me want to do better on the season."
Hanover Central's Paul Petrov took the first-place title at 112 and improved to 14-0 on the season. Crown Point's Cameron Halsted captured first place at 130 with a 9-2 victory over Morton's Tevin Tatro. Halsted improved his record to 17-2 on the season.
"I thought it was a pretty good day," Halsted said. "It was a confidence booster for me. Being able to get the championship was nice. Then the team championship is good too. We're a good team right now but we could definitely get better. We know what stuff we're doing wrong now and we know what we have to do to get better at it."
