EAST CHICAGO | The crowd took in a highly competitive wrestling sectional Saturday in East Chicago.
But the draw of the evening unquestionably was a 126-pound senior from Lake Central.
"Hurry up, Ayersman is about to wrestle" fueled the mood Saturday at the 10-team sectional.
No. 1 state-ranked Kyle Ayersman didn't disappoint, pinning Munster's Ian Boston in 1 minute, 7 seconds. He emerged with his fourth consecutive sectional and a record of 40-0 on the season and 180-2 overall.
"I try to wrestle every match like it's my last," Ayersman said. "I'm feeling pretty good right now and I have to correct some small errors, but my goal is to hold an opponent to no points."
Ayersman was one of seven individual champions as Lake Central ran away with the sectional with 293 points, blowing past second-place Munster (209.5) and ending the Mustang's four-year title reign.
Other champions for L.C. included Matt Lechowicz (120), Jordon Goodwin (132), Mike Escobedo (138), Jake Sebahar (145), Jeff Brassea (170), and Gelen Robinson (220), and every weight class will be represented in next week's regional.
"We've had a good year in a tough conference," L.C. coach Rod Wartman said. "We did have some hiccups in 106 and 113, but we avenged losses in 132 and 145, so it was a good time for that."
It wasn't all bad for Munster, though, as Dominic Fimbianti, one of the state's tallest wrestlers, claimed the only title for the Mustangs in dominating fashion in the 182-pound class, pinning Gavit's Derrick Medley in 1:01 to move his record to 32-1.
"I try to stay sharp, warm up well, and throw my legs into it," Fimbianti said.
Morton also had a good showing, finishing third with 172 points and notching three individual champions including Rickie Rodriguez (106), Ruben Rodriguez (113) and Fabian Durant (Hwt.).
Other individual winners included Highland's Mark Maldonado (152), Bishop Noll's Damian Gomez (160) and Hammond's Romeral Harris (195).
