Wrestling binds Hebron's Wallace brothers

It's a common sight at Hebron matches.

Freshman Danny Wallace is wrestling and brother -- senior Jon Wallace -- is right behind the coaches, anxiously pacing back and forth, shouting encouragement.

"A lot of times, we have to turn around and tell Jon, 'Shut it! We've got this,'" Hawks coach Todd Adamczyk said. "He gets very fired up when Danny's on the mat. It's a big brother thing."

Jon has been a part of the program since the inception of the club when he was in sixth grade. Three years later, along came Danny.

"He was 100 percent an influence," Danny said. "I look up to him. He's like a role model to me. I want to be like him."

That's not such a bad idea. Jon, a team co-captain, is 16-6 at 182 pounds. He became Hebron's first regional qualifier in the sport last season.

"Whenever he needs help, I try to help," Jon said. "I want to be a good example, listening to the coach, working hard in practice. I'm really glad (Danny) made the decision to come out. He was good in middle school and I'm hoping he does better in the coming years. It's tough (being a freshman). He's doing better than I did. I wasn't as good as he is."

Danny, a 152-pounder, is 10-10, a pleasant surprise for Adamczyk and the Hawks.

"A lot of what they do is the same," Adamczyk said. "Their stance, the way they shoot, their takedowns, they're almost all alike. The things they do right, they (both) do very well. The things they don't do well, they (both) don't do well."

Jon sees the similarities, too.

"The way he likes the sport, the moves we do, we're pretty much the same," he said.

Being known as "Jon's little brother" isn't an issue for Danny, who is open to any advice he's given.

"I'm pretty open to it," Danny said. " I know he's really good and I want to learn. I always watch him. When I wrestle, he yells at me, tells me good job, what I did wrong. He's like a coach. I try to take advantage of it totally."

While there is a disparity in the brothers' weights, it's not to the extent that Adamczyk can't put them in the same circle once in a while.

"It wakes things up a little bit," Adamczyk said. "They'll be half asleep, I put them together and they snap out of their funk. Jon usually gets the better of it, but they get after each other pretty good. You can see the sibling rivalry come out."

Having no other brothers or sisters, the Wallaces are close off the mat as well as on.

"We hang out now and then," Danny said. "We do a lot of stuff together."

Graduation will take Jon away next season -- he plans to enter an apprenticeship program -- but he will continue to be his Danny's biggest backer.

"I hope he does better than I do," Jon said. "A lot better."
