VALPARAISO | The Black Coaches and Administrators' sixth annual Minority Report Card was released today, stating that eight universities received D's or F's for hiring practices involving Division I football programs following the 2008 season.

The BCA began charting minority hires in 2004, and the organization has seen an increase from three minority football coaches in 2003 to an all-time high of nine in the Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A) this season.

The Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) currently has seven minority coaches.

Valparaiso football coach Stacy Adams, who is one of 16 minority head coaches, was aware of the report on Wednesday, but admitted that he hasn't spent much time looking at the results.

"I showed some of our coaches the report because I wanted them to know that someday they could be on the list (of minority head coaches)," Adams said. "Other than that, I haven't had much time to look at it. We're trying to win a football game this week."

Adams was hired at Valparaiso in the fall of 2005, shortly after former coach Tom Horne retired. Whether it was because Adams was hired late in the year or because the BCA was unaware that Adams had been promoted from offensive coordinator, the BCA did not release a grade for VU in either 2005 or 2006.

It wasn't until 2007 when members of the athletic department realized that Adams wasn't on the list of minority football coaches and alerted the BCA. Valparaiso still didn't receive a grade at that time.

While Adams, who has five minority assistant coaches, said there were some advantages to the BCA, namely the ability for coaches to network amongst each other, the fifth-year coach said color doesn't factor into his hiring practices.

"I'm going to hire the person that's going to help me win games," Adams said. "Whether that's white or black, I'm going to hire the best coach for the job."

In the 61-page BCA report, 11 of the 32 schools that hired new football coaches received A's. Grades are based on five criteria -- time frame, communication, candidates, makeup of the search committee and affirmative action, and then an overall grade is presented.

For its hiring of Danny Hope, Purdue received a D, in large part because of the F that the university received in its communication grade. Purdue was given a failing grade because the school never contacted the executive director of the BCA or the chair of the Minority Opportunity Interests Committee of the NCAA during the hiring process.
