Major League Baseball

GREINKE WINS AL CY YOUNG: Zack Greinke won the American League Cy Young Award on Tuesday, beating out Felix Hernandez after a spectacular season short on wins but long on domination. Greinke went 16-8 with a 2.16 ERA for the Kansas City Royals. Hernandez went 19-5 with a 2.49 ERA for the Seattle Mariners.

Greinke received 25 first-place votes and three seconds for 134 points in balloting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Hernandez drew two firsts, 23 seconds and one third for 80 points.

Pro baseball

RAILCATS EXTEND RADIO CONTRACT: The RailCats will continue to broadcast on The Lakeshore-FM (89.1) through the 2011 season, the team announced Tuesday.

The RailCats joined the public radio station when it went on the air before the start of the 2009 season after previously being broadcast on WEFM-FM (95.9) out of Michigan City.

FORMER BEARS COACH JAURON FIRED: Dick Jauron was fired by the Buffalo Bills on Tuesday, when the coach ran out of time to build a contender or come up with a way to fix an offense that sputtered even with the addition of Terrell Owens.

Jauron, the former coach of the Bears, leaves with a 24-33 record over three-plus seasons, and went 5-14 in his past 19.

College volleyball

PRAIRIE STATE PLAYERS EARN AWARDS: Outside hitter Samantha Krilich (T.F. South) and setter Colleen Gentile (T.F. North) were both unanimous picks to the NJCAA All-Region IV and the All-Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference teams. Both have been nominated for All-America honors.

Middle hitter Porsche West (Crete-Monee) also made the All-Skyway first team. Libero Erin Conroy and outside hitter Stephanie Carlson made the second team.

Men's basketball

PURDUE'S JACKSON OUT INDEFINITELY: Purdue point guard Lewis Jackson is out indefinitely after surgery Tuesday to repair a foot injury he suffered in practice last week.

Jackson started 30 games as a freshman last season and averaged a team-best 3.3 assists per game. He was expected to return from two suspensions in time for the No. 7 Boilermakers to play South Dakota State on Friday at the Paradise Jam in the Virgin Islands.

Women's soccer

VU'S KONDRATKO NAMED ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN: Valparaiso University senior Jackie Kondratko has been named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America First Team selection as chosen by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America).

 Kondratko, a senior mechanical engineering major, carries a 3.95 cumulative grade point average and helped lead the Crusaders to a runner-up finish in the 2009 Horizon League Tournament. For her career, Kondratko finished with 13 career goals, seventh most in school history, while her 33 career points are tied for seventh most all-time at Valpo. Her career concluded with six match-winning goals, tied for fifth on the all-time charts.

Prep cross country

LOCALS TO RUN IN MIDWEST MEET: Lake Central's Dana Payonk and Megan Plenus, Chesterton's David Osborn and Kouts' Jake Carden are members of the Indiana all-star teams that will compete in the Mideast Cross Country Meet of Champions on Saturday in Kettering, Ohio. The 12-person rosters feature the top finishing seniors from the recent state meet. Illinois, Ohio and Michigan will also be represented in the meet. Indiana's squad will be coached by Portage girls assistant Jay White. Crown Point boys coach Keith Iddings is one of the assistants.

MERRILLVILLE SEMISTATE TICKETS ON SALE: Tickets for Friday's Class 5A Northern Semistate game between Merrillville and Carmel will be sold today through 3:30 p.m. Friday in Merrillville High School's athletic office for $7 apiece. Use the school's "A" entrance when purchasing tickets. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Friday. Gates open at 5:30 p.m.

Prep volleyball

SIX LOCALS EARN ACADEMIC ALL-STATE HONORS: A pair from Boone Grove, two from the Northwest Crossroads Conference, and players from Portage and North Newton were named as part of the 62-member ISGA Academic All-State Volleyball team.

Wolves Julia Peceny and Katlyn Kranik joined Highland's Megan Grassl, Munster's Alex Doctor, North Newton's Jessica Klemz and Portage's Jordan Steiger on the team.

Receiving honorable mention on the team were: Elizabeth Mirabella (Andrean), Morgan Doelling (Boone Grove), Stephanie Lachowicz (Boone Grove), Lindsey Hutnick (Chesterton), Michelle Fekete (Chesterton), Anna Dorn (Munster) and Christina Pasyk (Munster).

WILTJER SIGNS WITH LEWIS UNIVERSITY: Illiana Christian senior middle hitter Jessica Wiltjer signed on to continue her volleyball career at Lewis University. Wiltjer helped lead the Vikings to 22 straight match victories, which ended in the Class 3A Crete-Monee Sectional final against Oak Forest.
