MUNSTER | Not long after nature finished filling the skies with lightning Friday night, Munster's offense decided to unleash some electricity of its own.
The Mustangs' version featured Mark Strbjak and Justin Gill teaming up to provide a huge spark against Lake Central in both clubs' season-opening contest. The duo did a pretty fair Montana-to-Rice imitation during the evening, as they connected three times on scoring plays.
Gill hauled in throws of 24, 35 and 51 yards from Strbjak to lift Munster to a 28-10 win over the Indians. The second of those hookups came just one play after a muffed L.C. punt return in the third quarter, while the last had Gill getting well beyond the Indians' secondary and easily applying what he referred to as "a dagger in the heart."
"They bit on the run and I just got open," Gill said.
Strbjak was shocked to see his teammate so wide open and admitted his biggest concern was simply "to not overthrow him."
"You never know what's going to happen, but it felt so good," Strbjak said. "We want to get (the passing game) down pat."
Almost as big was the initial collaboration between the two, which occurred with less than a minute to go before halftime. That gave the Mustangs a 14-3 advantage.
"Momentum is everything in football," Gill said, "and that got us pumped up."
Munster coach Leroy Marsh was glad his guys didn't lose their emotional edge in the midst of a weather-induced delay that lasted nearly 45 minutes. The stoppage came with 30.8 seconds remaining in the first period.
"I was really impressed with how our kids hung in there," Marsh said. "Our assistant coaches did a great job of keeping them focused."
Strbjak tallied the Mustangs' other TD on a 1-yard run. L.C.'s points were delivered on Erik Bisson's 29-yard field goal and a 14-yard pass from Ryan Hennessey to Andy Arellano.
