High school

BOONE SLATES FIRST PRACTICES: Any Boone Grove girl interested in playing golf should report for the first practice at 3 p.m. today at the Lakes of the Four Seasons practice green. Bring clubs if you have them.

Any boy in grades 9-12 interested in playing football for Boone Grove High School should report to Boone Grove Middle School for the first practice at 7:45 a.m. Monday.

CHESTERTON FOOTBALL SETS PRACTICE START: The first practice for all Chesterton High School football players will run from 6 to 10 a.m. Monday. Shoulder pads, helmet, cleats and tennis shoes (in the event of bad weather) are required. All players must have a current physical on file or must deliver it to coach John Snyder before being allowed to practice.

HIGHLAND ANNOUNCES SPORTS TRYOUTS: The Highland girls golf team will begin practice today. Golfers are to meet at 6:30 a.m. at the bus garage.

The girls cross country team will hold its first practice at 8 a.m. Monday at the high school. The boys will practice at 4 p.m.

Girls soccer will practice from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Monday at Merkley Elementary School. The boys soccer team will practice at Merkley from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Tryouts for boys tennis start on Monday. They are from 9 a.m. to noon at the tennis courts. Tryouts for girls volleyball as at 9 a.m. Monday in the auxiliary gym

Freshman football players may pick up their equipment from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the auxiliary gym. Practice is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday.

HOBART CROSS COUNTRY STARTS MONDAY: The Hobart boys and girls cross country season starts at 7:30 a.m. Monday. The team will meet outside the fieldhouse.

LAKE STATION FALL PRACTICES START TIMES: Football practice starts at 3 p.m. at the school. Players should meet in the boys varsity locker room.

Boys and girls cross country will start practice at 9 a.m. on Monday at the school.

Girls volleyball will start at 5:30 p.m. Monday while boys tennis will begin at 9 a.m. Monday at the tennis courts.

PORTAGE ANNOUNCES FALL PRACTICE SCHEDULE: The following is a list of practice information for Portage's fall athletic programs.

Girls golf will meet from 7 to 11 a.m. today at Robbinhurst.

Boys and girls cross country will meet at 8 a.m. Monday at Willowcreek Middle School.

Girls volleyball's first practice will run from 8 to 11 a.m. Monday in the fieldhouse. Players are asked to bring a lunch, running shoes, volleyball shoes, kneepads and a water bottle.

Football for grades 10-12 will begin at 7 a.m. Monday in the varsity locker room at PHS East. Freshmen will report to PHS West at 8 a.m. Aug. 10. For details, contact coach Mark Peterson at (219) 764-6109 or e-mail him at mpeterson@portage.k12.in.us.

All athletes must have a physical dated after May 1 to practice.

DISCOUNT CARD DAY SATURDAY AT PHS: All athletes in grades 9-12 participating at Portage High School this year are to attend Discount Card Day at 8 a.m. Saturday in the fieldhouse. Coaches will distribute cards at this time.

PARENTS MEETING THURSDAY AT PORTAGE: There will be a mandatory meeting for all parents of Portage High School fall athletes in grades 9-12 at 7 p.m. Thursday in the PHS East auditorium.

HOCKEY CLUB SEEKS PLAYERS: The PHC Hockey Club is looking for players for its upcoming season. To be eligible, they must be residents of Hobart or Porter County and be entering grades 9-12. Practices will begin Monday. For details, call Jerry at (219) 406-9809.

VALPO ANNOUNCES TRYOUTS: Valparaiso High School has announced its tryout schedule for several fall sports.

Girls golf will meet at 3 p.m. today at Forest Park and at 3 p.m. Saturday and Monday at Valparaiso Country Club.

Boys cross country's Lantern Run/Parent Meeting will be at 8 p.m. Saturday at the fieldhouse.

Girls cross country will meet from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Aug. 10 at VHS Door No. 7 and again from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Sunset Hill Farm.

Girls soccer will meet from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday at Viking Arena.

Boys soccer will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday at Viking Arena.

Boys tennis will start Monday and meet daily at the tennis courts from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and again at 3 p.m.

Volleyball will meet at Viking Gym from 6 to 8 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. Monday and Tuesday and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, with player selections to follow.

WASHINGTON TWP. SLATES PRACTICES: Washington Twp. High School has announced the starting times for fall sports practices.

They are: girls varsity and junior varsity volleyball, Monday, 3-6 p.m.; boys varsity and JV volleyball, Monday, 5-7:30 p.m.; varsity boys and girls cross country, Monday, 3-5 p.m., and varsity soccer, Monday, 5-7 p.m. All athletes must have a physical on file with the school in order to participate. Middle school

BEN FRANKLIN RELEASES START DATES: Ben Franklin Middle School volleyball tryouts will run Aug. 10-14 in Boucher Gym. Eighth-graders will meet from 10 a.m. to noon, while seventh-graders will meet from 12:30 to 2 p.m.

Football players should meet to pick up equipment from 4 to 5:45 p.m. Aug. 10 in the annex gym. Practices will run from 5:45 to 8 p.m. Aug. 10, 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 11-3 and from 3 to 5 p.m. Aug. 14.

Cross country runners will meet from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Aug. 11-14 by the annex gym. Athletes should wear full running gear and bring water.

BOONE GROVE MEETING MONDAY: A meeting for all Boone Grove seventh- and eighth-graders interested in playing middle school baseball will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at the middle school field. Anyone who plans to play but is unable to attend the meeting must contact coach Rollie Thill at (219) 988-4481, ext. 2179.

W.T. SETS PRACTICE TIMES: Washington Twp. has announced the starting times for fall middle school sports practices. They are: baseball, Monday, 8-10:30 a.m.; girls volleyball, Aug. 19, 3-5 p.m., and cross country, Aug. 17, 3-4:30 p.m. All athletes must have a physical on file with the school in order to participate. Illinois

H-F ANNOUNCES FALL SPORTS TRYOUT DATES: The following is a list of practice information for Homewood-Flossmoor's fall athletic programs.

Boys and girls cross country will meet from 8 to 11 a.m. Aug. 12-14 at the South Gym entrance.

Girls diving will practice from 3 to 5 p.m. Aug.12-14 at the natatorium. Girls swimming will meet on Aug. 12 with varsity from 7 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 5 p.m. in the natatorium. Junior varsity will meet from 5 to 7 p.m. in the natatorium.

Boys golf will hold tryouts from 2 to 8 p.m. Aug. 12 at Coyote Run Golf Course and Aug.13-14 from 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Coyote Run.

Girls golf will hold tryouts 7:30 a.m. Aug. 12 at Coyote Run. Tryouts will also be at 10 a.m. Aug. 13 and 9 a.m. Aug. 14.

Field hockey will have practice 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 12-14 at the field hockey field.

Ice Hockey will have tryouts from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Sept. 8-9 at the ice rink.

Boys soccer varsity practice is 9 to 11 a.m. Aug. 12-14 at the Governors Highway field. Freshman and sophomores will have their first practice 1:30 to 4 p.m. at the Kedzie Avenue and Governors Highway fields.

Girls tennis will hold varsity tryouts 3 to 5 p.m. Aug. 12 and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 13-15 at the south courts. Freshman and sophomores will go from 2 to 4 p.m. Aug. 12 and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 13-15 at the north courts.

Girls volleyball will begin tryouts for varsity from 8 to 11 a.m. Aug. 12 in the fieldhouse. Freshmen will practice from 2 to 5 p.m. in the fieldhouse and sophomores from 8 to 11 a.m.

Varsity and sophomore football's first practice is from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 12. The freshmen will go from 2 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 12.

MARIAN CATHOLIC TO HOLD FALL SPORTS PRACTICES: The following are the times and dates for the first day of fall sports practices at Marian Catholic High School.

Boys and girls cross country will practice from 9 to 11 a.m. Aug 12. meet at the football stadium track.

Men's golf will have an organization meeting at 6 p.m. Aug. 10 in the East Gym. Varsity tryouts begin at 6:45 a.m. Aug. 12 at Lincoln Oaks , 7 a.m. Aug. 13 at University Golf Course and 7:15 a.m. Aug. 14 at Deer Creek.

Frosh-Soph tryouts are at 1 p.m. Aug. 12,13 and 14 at Lincoln Oaks.

Girls golf will have tryouts at :30 a.m. Aug. 12, 6:45 a.m. Aug. 13 and 7:45 a.m. Aug. 14. All tryouts at Coyote Run.

Boys soccer will have practice for all levels from 3 to 6 p.m. Aug. 12, 13 and 14 at the west fields.

Girl's tennis will have tryouts Aug. 12 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the tennis courts. Also, 9 to 11 a.m. Aug. 13 and 2 to 4 p.m. Aug. 14.

Girls volleyball will have tryouts from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 12, 13, 14 in the West Gym. Sophomores will go at the same time except for Aug. 14 when they will go from 3 to 5:30 p.m.

Freshmen will go from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Aug. 12, 13, 14.

Girls swimming will go from 3 to 5 p.m. Aug. 17, 18 and 19 at Governor's State University.

Football will start Aug. 8 with an 8 a.m. administrative meeting for varsity and sophomores. Freshmen will meet at 9:30 a.m.

The first varsity practice is 9 a.m. Aug. 12 with three sessions. The first sophomore practice is 7 a.m. Aug. 12 and the first freshman practice is 3 p.m. Aug. 12.
