CUBS TRADE HEILMAN TO D'BACKS: Reliever Aaron Heilman was acquired Thursday by the Arizona Diamondbacks from the Cubs for two minor league prospects.

Chicago gets 24-year-old left-hander Scott Maine and 23-year-old infielder Ryne White. Maine, a sixth-round draft pick in 2007, was a combined 4-5 with seven saves and a 2.90 ERA with Double-A Mobile and Triple-A Reno last season. White, a fourth-round draft pick in 2008, hit .266 with 58 RBIs for Class A Visalia.

SWARBRICK PLANS TO HAVE QUICK DECISION ON WEIS: Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick plans to make a decision on the future of coach Charlie Weis within days of the season's end.

Swarbrick said Thursday that how he made his decision last fall, when he met with Weis three days after the season ended and told him he would be back, would be "fairly representative of the timing" of what he does this year.

Swarbrick said the student-athletes are his primary concern because he knows the scrutiny of Weis is difficult for the team.

INJURIES HAVE HAMPERED ND'S ALDRIDGE: This year's seniors won't leave Notre Dame with the same accolades bestowed when they signed with the school and coach Charlie Weis predicted they would lay the foundation for the Fighting Irish to remain among the elite teams for years to come.

Weis, who had been hampered in recruiting the season before because he was finishing his job as offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots, signed what recruiting analysts described as the school's best in recent years.

The two highest-rated players in that class were tackle Sam Young and running back James Aldridge, a Merrillville grad.

Aldridge's career has been hampered by injuries. He led the team in rushing as a sophomore with 463 yards on 121 carries, his most productive year. As a fullback this season, just five carries for 15 yards in four games.

"You come in as a highly touted class with a bunch of studs, it is what you think it would be. Then reality hits," Aldridge said.

YERGLER TRANSFER CASE MOVED TO STARKE COUNTY: The lawyer for North Judson sophomore Winston Yergler said that the case against the IHSAA to permit Yergler to play basketball for the Bluejays this season has been moved from LaPorte County to Starke County.

Nick Otis said that the injunction hearing scheduled for Thursday afternoon ended with the LaPorte judge saying that the injunction was filed in the wrong county, therefore halting Yergler's chance to play in Thursday's scrimmage against Valparaiso.

Otis said he will walk into the court in Starke County on Friday to request the earliest hearing possible.

Yergler and his family moved from Kouts to North Judson during the summer, but while his transfer was approved by Kouts, it wasn't accepted by North Judson. The IHSAA ruled Yergler ineligible until next season.
